WUERTH ENDING TODAYt SPENCER TRACY " VAN JOHNSON~ SROBERT MITC.UM x .y Ep CAN BE LAZY: Office Workers Tell What Makes Ideal Boss U S - By MARILYN WOOD Shape up, office executives! 6,537 office workers throughout the United States and Canada recently described the "ideal boss." In answer to a survey taken by the National Office Management Association of Denham and Com- pany the workers reported that they prefer a man between 40 and 49 years of age. He must have a high degree of managerial skill, a good deal of common sense, and be eminently fair to workers. Further qualifications include a high degree of intelligence, especi- ally where there are a lot of older women. Where there are many young women, an understanding nature is a big help, the survey reported. Experience is desirable but not absolutely essential, except to old- er men. The "ideal boss" doesn't have to be very energetic-as a matter of fact, laziness isn't held against him. He doesn't need much of a sense of humor unless he has sev- eral older women under him, say the office workers who filled out questionnaires, If he is impatient most-of the workers won't mind, but they won't stand for his being unjust. They want him to be ready with a pat on the back for good work and to let people know what's go- ing on in the business. In offices where there are a lot of young people, a boss with a superior attitude has several strikes against him. Where there are a lot of older workers, lying is absolutely out. Although most workers don't care whether the boss is lazy or late for appointments, they don't like him to put things off which concern the workers because they don't want to work under pressure to make up. Grouchiness makes the boss un- popular with the young women and a "know-it-all" attitude irri- tates the men. Only the older women seem to worry very much about his ap- pearance. The workers think the "ideal boss"' wouldn't be too stuck-up to call them by their first names. However, they don't mind if he wants to be "mistereCl." Most workers, particularly the younger women, can take stub- bornness in their stride. Older workers don't mind if the boss has a temper if he is all right in other ways. Of the 6,537 office workers, 5,000 say that- they would hire them- selves for their own jobs if they were the bosses.
