PERSONNEL INTERVIEW: Thurs., Fri., May 31, June 1: I WHEEL-BARROWER--With evident difficulty, the young workman drives his block-laden barrow BEAM-STRADDLER--Construction worker gives final twist to up the narrow board. Just as he reached the top, barrow slipped, blocks spilled. bolt on the superstructure of building's Student Workshop, Crew Raises $1 ,250OQO Installation Did you ever stop to watch a building in construction? First the orange steel beams reach skyward. The wood and con- crete reinforcement follow. Then, when the first level is well under way, the beams again begin climb- ing toward the second story, and then toward the third. Lagging behind this sequence is * the brick exterior, rising silently over the bare superstructure. *The Student Activities Building is growing along these lines. Rods and posts shoot out in crazy geo- metrical angles. Great windowless walls sweep out almost overnight. The unfolding structure almost seems to palpitate and swell like a living creature. But effecting this apparently spontaneous development is a corps of construction workers. Drillers, brick-layers, carpenters and elec- tricians are only the beginning of the list. Laughing, building, tossing jokes back and, forth, these men make up an autonomous little commun- ity. They are as unaware of the University atmosphere and the student body as the latter seem to be unaware of them. A student entering this world feels somehoW out of place. The building is not ready for him yet. It belongs to these workers now. But when it is completed, the builders will feel as out of place inside it as the student does now. The building is scheduled for completion next spring. The $1,- 250,000 structure will house ap- proximately 80 student organiza- tions along with the Dean of Men's' and the Dean of Women's offices. The wing on Thompson which has just started to go up will hold a Student Workshop, where such projects as floats and theatrical scenery may be produced. What do the workers have to say about it all? They don't have much f comment to offer, except, as one put it, "The building has moved along pretty good."
