TILE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, MAY 27, ,. S__DY_ M Y 2_19_ . . NORTH-SOUTH PLAY: Trump Should Be Drawn Before Pulling Side Tricks e By ED SIMONS Daily Bridge Columnist NORTH 4 void V K 10853 * Q104 4 KQ732 EAST WEST 4 K Q 109 5 2 V 94 f A762 49 SOUTH 43 864 A J f K 5 a 4 A 1054 V Q 76 4 A 7 3 J98 4 J 8 6 2 14 2NT SNT 5 4 10 4 P P P 2 3' 4. P 4 V P P' P South's opening club bid and West's spade overcall are standard. At this point, North felt that his partner's strength would not be wasted in spades and made his two spade cue bid, forcing his partner to keep bidding until game is reached. South's no trump bids show that he has a minimum opening bid with some values in spades. North continued by showing his heart suit, hoping a ten trick heart game could be found. South could, not cooperate, and the club game was bid. Four hearts can be made, But to do so, North must guess not only who has the queen of hearts, but also how the diamond suit is distributed. Against five clubs, the spade king was led and trumped in dum- my. Lack of intermediate clubs made South feel that the cross- The, BRO WN JUG 1?e4 twvrn t 1204 South University SPAGHETTI AND MEALS OUR SPECIALTY 10 A.M. to 8 P.M. Daily Except Saturday ruff .technique would not be safe, so he drew trump. Declarer then sought new ways of winning tricks, and tried to lead a diamond to the king. This was eagerly consumed by West who promptly continued another diamond. Declarer tried the ten this time, but this lost to the jack. East led a third diamond. Declarer now needed to finesse hearts to develop the needed dis- card for his fourth spade. He guessed wrong again and was down one. South's play violates one of the most basic techniques of playing a hand. That is: Draw trump and then establish the longest side suit. While obviously not a cure all, it is a good procedure to think about when planning the play. In this case, even, the plan should be modified a bit. SDeclarer should play the club king, then lead low to his ace. When trump fail to split, the heart finesse should be taken before drawing the last trump. This is safe -- as West cannot give his partner a ruff-but, more impor- tant, it preserves a trump entry to the heart suit. Although the finesse loses, South can ruff the spade return in the dummy and still draw the last trump with the queen. Now the heart suit is played, two spades and one diamond discarded. Thus only one heart and one diamond are lost. Prof Brown Gets Fulbright Award Prof. Gerald S.
