THE MICHIGAN DAILY SATURDAY, MAY' 26, IM., S ATTJRDAY. MAY 26, 1956 Institute Gives Children Help By JIM BOW The house on Washington Heights is large, with three floors, a big kitchen and room for 17 children. This house is an office building, - clinic and home, for it is the state y center of the Michigan Children's Institute. The 17 boys and girls who are c now living in the building are some 1 of' the 1000 children under the f guardianship of the Institute. These 17 are only temporary re- sidents, however, for they, like the f others, will be placed in homes o selected by the Children's Insti- tute. The Michigan Children's Insti- tute is a public agency, which places children in homes rather than keep them in a public in- stitution. Social Adjustment Before a boy or girl is given a home, there first comes a period of observation, examination, and "social adjustment." This "social adjustment" may involve bitter feelings - resent- ment and fear; for it is the Pro- 1 bate Court which sends children to the Institute, after deciding that - the parents were either unfit or unable to care for them. A child may resent those who he feels have taken him from his real I home, and he may fear the future as a ward of the state. Fear Is Normal This description is a part of the Institute's attitude that even the e normal children, those of "sound mind and body" who are in the Z state's care, feel very strongly about their separation and trans- ition from their former homes. This attitude has governed much of the Institute's present program, the planned activities and the re- creation facilities. Children under temporary care in Ann Arbor attend school for . half a day. Then, they spend the afternoon under the supervision rof an activities director. i Children Want to Stay According to Miss Gertrude Bo- gart, some children have even wanted to stay in the Institute af- ter homes had been found for them. The history of the Michigan Children's Institute began short- ly after the Civil War, when a special home was established to take the children out of the coun- ty poor houses. The present home - placement program was begun in this cen- tury, and Michigan was the second state to provide specialized facili- ties for its children under the philosophy that children were not to remain for their growing up in an institution but in good homes There are now 64 people on the staff of the Institute who oversee the work through the southern part of Michigan. zr-= TRAVEL RIDERS and DRIVERS sign up at Union LOBBY for rides home. )27S FOR SALE ARGUS C-3 camera outfit with flash, telephoto and light meter.
