Service handles between 1,500 and 2,000 pieces of mail a day. Often this number is increased by large mailing lists from such campus activity centers as the Administration Building and Alumni Memorial Hall. Walter Kneer, University assist- ant purchasing agent, says "The primary design of Mail Service is to facilitate faculty and adminis- tration functions." He explains that campus mails are not open to student use or personal correspondence by Uni- versity personnel. Began In Alcove In a recent interview, Kneer said Campus Mail Service started in an alcove in the basement of University Hall, torn down to make way for the new Angell Hall auditoriums. When the new Administration Building was built, Kneer said, Campus Mail Service used its facilities. But space in the Ad- ministration Building was at a premium, and Campus Mail Serv- ice shifted its location to the General Stores Building. Supported by University appro- I _Jh 6 onoa priation, Campus Mail Service was originally under auspices of the University's accounting depart- ment. Recently, however, it was transferred to General Stores. Kneer said four men are em- ployed under the present setup. New Delivery System He cited a new, recently in- stalled system of pickup-sort-de- liver. Previously, mail was picked up, brought to Campus Mail Serv- ice headquarters, sorted, and then delivered on the next mail run. Under the new system, men on a truck equipped with sorting bins, pick up mail and sort it immedi- ately. In this manner, mail can often be delivered to its destina- tion within a few minutes, pro- vided the destination is "ahead" on the route. Few pieces of mail are lost, Kneer said, and mail is opened only for identification purposes. Kneer explained that insufficient addressing-marking the envelope with the receiver's name in care of the University-makes added work for Campus Mail Service employes, in addition to impeding delivery. Besides its regular pickup-sort- deliver duties, C -- M S - ice frequently makes banking runs for University personnel and picks up traveling tickets and postage for University staff members.
