THE M CHIGA.N DAILY JQTfWlrtAV' ATAmr A/4 iACd' " « " V I IUNDX, MAY 20, 1956 i 56 DRAMA SEASON: Ethel Waters Inspires Rehearsal Cast By ADELAIDE WILEY In a black cotton dress, her gray hair braided, Ethel Waters went through yesterday's "Member of he Wedding" rehearsal with un- uffled hard work. Very much at ease in her origi- nal Broadway role as Sadie Bernice Brown, Miss Waters even aided shirt - sleeved d i r e c t o r John 'Shaughnessy in giving the other performers some quiet help. To young Phil Lindsay as he ran excitedly on the stage in a mo- nent of crisis and i ness Miss Waters remarked: "Work up a sweat before you come in. Stand out there and do exercisessfor five minutes, be. really breathless when you say 'The Law's after me, Sa- lie'." Technique and Emotion Seated in a comfortable side- .ine chair, "because I want to rest ny 260 pounds and my voice a ittle," Miss Waters softly asked :or near-perfect technique and emotion from each of her cohorts. Janet DeGore, who plays the part of adolescent Frankie, had to have her expressive hands sub- lued in the scene where she tells Sadie, "I want to leave this kitch- en and go away from home" Miss Waters, warm and refresh- ng; created an atmosphere of no. ussiness, no strain in the rehear- sal. 'Never Get Tired' In a moment of rest, Richard Ward, who played in "Member" with Miss Waters last summer, said he and Miss Waters "never get tired of doing this play. There's always something new to be put WUERTH 1 REHEARSAL TIME-'Member of the Wedding' cast goes through strenuous rehearsal in= preparation for the opening tomorrow night in Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre. ENDING TODAY Deadly Accident of Science AGAR MARA CORDAY CARROLL Also "ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK" in it, whether it's new stage en- trances to be dealt with, or new people. "Phil Lindsay has been with us before, and so has Janet DeGore. We're going out to take pictures of the campus this afternoon-espe- cially that .fountain outside the League." Ward, who wanted to be a doctor at ope time, says he was a boxer for eight years. "My stage career began with vaudeville," he says. "I was in 'The Florida Blossom' at the age of twelve, singing and dancing. The war kind of broke into my career, but there's nothing like the stage." Commenting on Miss Waters, Truman Smith, '35 (who plays Frankie's father), said, "She's quite wonderful. In this play for instance, she knows it so well she1 can immediately tell us whether something we want to try is pos- sible or not. She's just a good act- ress, that's all." Formerly a speech teacher at the University, Smith "just acts, now." He will leave for Europe after "Member" is run, to make a movie with Marlene Dietrich called "The Monte Carlo Story." The mother of eleven-year-old Ricky Hamilton, who plays the boy John Henry, sat in a chair well away from the tape on the floor designating the edge of the make- believe stage. 'Take It' Then Miss Waters sat smoothing the red yarn hair of a doll in her scene after John Henry's death, interrupted her lines to say calmly to a hesitant photographer, "Take As rehearsal neared its end, Miss DeGore donned a leopard skin- decorated scarf and Lindsay took out a pack of cigarettes. Smith got ready for a trip to a local clothing store because "In this new movie I'm an American tourist and I need a pretty large wardrobe." Necessary Costume Miss Waters made sure a neces- sary costume for Monday night would be there. At the end of rehearsal, O'Shaughnessy smiled, ran a hand through his black hair, told every- one: "Keep everything you've got. 'Come tomorrow afternoon, but take the rest of today off and get some sun. You were so good today I have nothing to say." Coston, To Go To Seminar Dean W. Coston, senior studio engineer of the University's broad- casting service, is the only repre- sentative from the state of Michi- gan chosen to attend a week-long engineering seminar at the Uni- versity of Illinois. Purpose of the seminar is to examine problems of the National Association of Educational Broad- casters' nation-wide network of educational radio stations. Coston, a former Ann Arbor city councilman, is attending the sem- inar as a recipient of the 1956 Radio and, Audio Engineering Grants, sponsored by the NAEB.
