SATURDAY, MAY 12, 1959 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE TEREE SGC Flight Okayed; Set Fare Boost The Student Government Coun- cil sponsored flight to Europe will definitely leave for London and Amsterdam next month. Final approval from the Civil Aeuronautics Board and the Uni- versity has made the flight offi- cial. As a result of a meeting held in the Union Tuesday evening it was decided that passengers signed up to take the trip will accept an increase in fare to cover charges for those who have not yet signed. These students will receive rebates if more people decide to take the t trip.; According to Ray McCarus, '57, travel committee chairman, there is still room for a limited number of passengers. McCarus states that passports can still be easily ob- tained and there is still plenty of time for all selective service regis- trants to clear their trip with their draft boards. The plane leaves from Idlewild Airport, New York City, June 27 and returns Sept. 11. The cost for round trip is $350. One way passage is available either way at half that price. Lea gue Lists Summer Heads League appointments for sum- mer school are as follows: President of the League will be Cherry Harris, '58; judiciary chair- man, Jocelyn Watt, '57; members of the judiciary committee will be Judy Barnes, '58 and Pat Car- roll, '57; social chairman is Jenny Morgan, '59; publicity chairman is Sue York, '59; and dance class chairman is Judy Gamble, '58. For the fall semester, dance class chairman will be Janet O'- Brien, '58 and Merit-Tutorial Com- mittee. members will be Phyllis Schaberg, '58. Junior Girls Play will have as its music chairman, Angela Suino, '58; choral director, Betty Edson; scenery chairman, Sally Jo Ar- nold, '58; and assistant scenery chairman, Chris Dittmer, '58. BRITISH ACTRESS: 'Troublemaker' Deirdre Weeps Through Career v-- By ADELAIDE WILEY The name Deirdre m e a n s' "troublemaker," according to pret- ty Deirdre Owens, young up-and- coming stage and television ac- tress, soon to appear in the Drama Season's opener, "Black Chiffon," on May 14. But, with her long brown hair, honest wide blue eyes, and frank, unassuming personality, Miss Ow- ens could hardly be called a troublemaker, except in some of her stage parts. "It seems I can't get away from playing 16 to 19-year-olds," she acknowledges in her pleasant Brit- ish accent. "I've wept through so many teenage scenes; I was even in a play called 'Teach Me How to Cry'. , Has Offstage Maturity "I'd very much like to grow up-professionally, that is. I think I already have, offstage." However, in "Black Chiffon," Miss Owens will play someone in her early twenties. Asked what her own age is, Miss Owens laughingly states: "That I'm not going to admit until I do get a chance for some grownup parts. I guess I just have to get some wrinkles. Then anyone can know how old I am." Miss Owens was born in London, came to America in 1940 with her mother. She is an only child, and says, "All my mother has to do is take care of me -and the cat," in New York City. Interested in Drama Always interested in drama, Miss Group Leaders Must Sign Today Today is the last day for stu- dents to sign up as orientation group leaders for next semester. Group leaders will lead mixed groups of men and women and lead 'freshmen or transfer student groups. They will receive their meals free for the first few days of the orientation period. Applications may be filled out from 3 to 5, p.m. in the Student Offices of the Union. DEIRDRE OWENS .. Drama Season actress. Owens began her career in ballet, but could not continue because "I am afflicted with asthma. So they put me in theatrical work to keep me busy." And Miss Owens has been kept busy with four years in television w'ork and much more in stage work. L a s t season on Broadway, though, her understudy commit- ment (to-Betsy von Furstenberg), in "The Chalk Garden" ended and she had nothing to do for awhile. "People kept asking me what I would do, and I just quoted a line from Chalk Garden-'I shall con- tinue to explore the astonishment of living."'"- (Continued from Page 2) Holt, Mich. - Teacher needs: Science (Chem/Physics); Gen.
