Takikawa, president of the Kyoto dting Director of the Center for [. ing American colleges and univer- sities in an attempt to study the American educational system and bring new educational ideas to Japan._ Interviewed through interpre- ters. at the center for Japanese Studies yesterday, Prof. Takikawa explained that in the pre-world war II period, only a few students attended universities. They had undergone extensive training at a "higher school," a level of educa- tion above that of the American high school. General Training Now, the professor pointed out, students attend universities di- rectly upon graduating hgh school. The first two years of university education, he said, is intended as general training. Specialized stu- dy is concentrated during the last two years. During the Meigi Era, 1868-1912, Japan adopted a western education system, based primarily on the structure of French and German educational set-ups. This system continued through 1945. Prof. Takikawa expressed the' hope that Japan would be able to improve its educational facilities in the future.
