At 1 p.m. the locker room was almost deserted. Baseball practice wouldn't start in earnest for another two hours, but sitting before his locker, don- ning his uniform, -was Wolverine captain Moby Benedict. The scrap- py shortstop is always the first toI arrive for practice. Noted as Holler-Guy Moby is the team's holler- guy and can be easily recognized cur- ing a game by the simple method' of tracing the emanation of aj wierd, wailing chant that floats' across the infield. He admits that this barrage of "any words that come into my mind" is to spark the team and not to frighten the opposition. The 5'8" senior from Detroit is a member of Druids honorary and Phi Epsilon Kappa professional fraternity. He is in the School of Education and hopes to go into coaching after graduation. How- ever, these plans will have to wait if he has the chance to enter professional baseball. Played for Gage Champions Moby attended Southeastern high school in Detroit and earned let- ters in basketball, as well as base- ball. He played on the 1953 South- eastern cage squad which won the city title and finished number one in the state. This is Benedict's third year as the regular varsity shortstop. Last season he racked up a .333 batting MOBY BENEDICT ... three year veteran lm SURE three intimofe tales byGUY de MAUPASSANT DANIELLE-DARRIEUX.JEAN GABIN-"SIMONE SIMON .CLAUDE DAUPHIN ..M MADELEINE RENAUD -GABY MORLAY.rPIERRE BRASSEUR.DANIEL.GELNI i MUSICFOR THE MAY FESTIY'L 4th Concert ... Saturday Evening, May 5 . . . 8:30 P.M. average in the Big Ten as the Wolverine's lead-off man. His biggest thrill as a Michigan player came last season in a game against Iowa. The Hawkeyes held a 2-1 lead when Moby came to bat with a man on base. After having struck out his first three times at bat, he promptly blasted a home run to ice the game for Michigan. Steals Second, Then First "I'm probably the only man to steal second and first base on the same play," he grinningly remark- ed. "In the final game of the Dixie Classic this year against Wake Forrest, I stole second on a hit and run. The pitch was wild, hitting the catcher's shin guard and bouncing toward first base. "I heard someone yell, 'Foul ball,' and went back to first. The Wake Forest players were too stun- ned to tag me." Commenting on this year's team Benedict said, "Ray Fisher plays a good brand of baseball. I'm very glad to be playing for him. "I think we're a better ball club than we looked in the- Indiana game. At present we're not hitting, but eventually we'll come out of it."
