THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, APRIL. Z7, 1956 LPL.TEMIHGNDIY RDY PRL ,15 Objections of South Rest On Fear of Intermarriage (Conitnued from Page 1) 11 "Actually, the differences in fre- quency of genetic material is what describes the differences between races," Prof. Thieme said. "In terms of important charac- teristics," he summarized, "all mankind is probably alike in 95, or more, per cent of its traits, with variation in certain characteris- tics." Turning to the problem of race mixture, Prof. Thieme commented, "I believe that the fundamental and deep-seated objection of Southerners to desegregation is the fear of mixed marriages. They know that contact between their children and those of other races will will lead to racial mixture." Race Mixture Not Harmful "Speaking only to the bioligical problem of race mixture and at the same time realizing there are cultural and psychological prob- lems as well," Prof. Thieme com- mented, "it seems to me that there is no evidence that race mixture is harmful from a biological or evolutionary point of view." In fact, he continued, there seems to be some evidence which holds race mixture to be biologically de- sirable. "While this is not conclu- sive," he said, "it does follow that outbreeding is a desirable thing." "The solution of the race prob- lem will never be solved by bio- Rogical research," Prof. Thieme commented, "for the study of rac- ial biology offers no solution to racial prejudice. It is a cultural problem depending largely economic and social causes." upon DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN (Continued from Page 2) at 8 p.m. today in the Lydia Mendels- sohn Theatre.
