At a meeting of the American
Association of Physical Anthro-
pologists held in Chicago on April
6, It was reported that three Uni-
versity of Michigan faculty mem-
bers had succeeded in blood typ-
ing bones believed to be the old-
est human remains yet found in
the Western hemisphere.
Studies conducted on the so-
called Midland Skull, discovered
in 1953 in western Texas, indicate
that the Midland Man substantial-
ly preceded all human civilizations
known to have inhabited this
hemisphere. The evidence places
him prior to the last advance of
the Wisconsin Glaciation 10,000
years ago.
Associate Professor Frederick P.
Thieme and teaching fellow Char-
lotte M. Otten of the University
Department of Anthropology re-
port that the blood tests adminis-
tered to these fossil remains have
shown the Midland Man to have
been type "A".
This is especially noteworthy
because anthropologists until now
believed that type "0" was the
primitive, ancestral type of all
civilizations in the New World.
Using methods of serology, the
science treating the preparation,
use and reactions of animal ser-
ums, Assistant Biologist H. Eldon
Sutton, of the University's Insti-
tute of Human Biology, subjected
the Midland fossil fragments to a
series of extremely sensitive lab-
oratory tests. He detected the
presence of six different and dis-
tinct amino acids in the remains.
Amino acids are the basic constitu-
ents of naturally occurring pro-
teins in plants and animals.
In conducting such tests for
blood type, it is not necessary to
have actual blood, the scientists
point out. It is possible to de-
termine the blood type of most
persons if there is any organic ma-
terial from the remains available
for testing.
