The slim brunette, who has al- ready won several awards for her designing efforts, proudly consid- ers herself a member of the "new regime" in the profession. Made up of several young styl- ists the "new regime" has infused modern ideas into fashion, the lifeblood of the garment industry and has partially eliminated the clotihing nanufacturer's apprehen- sion of hiring unexperienced de- signers. Soft-Spoken Designer The soft-spoken designer, who stands a pert five feet three inches, tarted her career as a free-lanceI illustrator for well-known styl- ists. A New York clothing manufacturer took an in- terest in her) and gave the aspiring stylist her first job. Her creations revolved around the junior figure, which had been neglected by the fashion indus- try. Success greeted her, but the youngest designer in the field'de- cided to retire and become a house- wife. Away from a specific job, she continued to design for her friends "just for fun." Temporary Stay When her husband entered the dress business she joined him tem- porarily as stylist until he, found another designer. Her "tenipor- ary" stay has still not ended and has made the firm one of the most important in the country. Two years ago Mrs. Klein won the Mademoiselle magazine award in designing which is given each year to the 10 top women in each field. Several months ago she was given the Coty award "for achievement in American fashion." "American fashion," the designer remarked, "is not as dependent on Paris as it used to be." Rather, Mrs. Klein explained, Parisian designers have come here for ideas. "Their fashions used to be highly intricate, but because of American influence, they are much simpler." Describing her new spring line, pert Mrs. Klein stressed the "gen- eral casualness" of its appearance. The "American Look" of pleated skirts, white shirts and short navy jackets prevails. 4 x r -t SPRING ACCESSORIES-To add the finishing touch to her new spring outfit the well dressed woman may select a honey colored leather tote bag and gold cotton gauntlet gloves plus a gaily colored neck scarf and a bunch of black-eyed susans. -Daily-Peter Song BRIGHT TOUCHES-An attractive beige purse and wrist length gloves with a tan leather belt and white daisies will add a bright touch to the smart woman's lue or light brown ensemble. One student from Thailand ex- plained that his first impressions of American styles were gotten through movies, especially musi- cals. When he arrived here, though, he found that our stylesI are not quite as extreme as those seen in films. Women in Thailand cities follow American styles by reading fashion magazines. They don't wear bob- by sox, however, because they con- sider these for children, and be- cause of the heat. ing." Here women like to1be seen in them, whereas in Thailand, women in bathing suits avoid be- ing viewed by others. One complaint, though, was that "Bermudas look strange because they distort a woman's figure." A German student said that here people have more clothes than they do in Germany. Sport Clothes American women wear sport clothes, such as slacks, shorts and bobby sox, more often than Ger- man women do. Women there tend to dress up more and to take greater care of how they look, since they usually walk wherever they go and are seen by a great many people. Since there is less out-of-school social life school, they wear dresses or skirts and blouses to classes more often than the uniform sweaters and skirts worn here. In America there are more for- mal dances, and almost every woman has at least one formal gown. Germans Dress Neatly German men also wear sport clothes less frequently than Ameri- can men. They generally dress ,neatly and don't wear levis or saddle shoes. A student from England com- ments that the men in England/ dress about the same way as American men. There are, how- ever, a few differences in women's clothes. He feels that American women generally have good taste and take pride in their appearance. They dress more informally and less uniformally than English women. ct- 4 f 4 Bathing Suits Americans aren't afraid of be-I ing leaders in the style world.
