For afternoon and daytime wear, there are a number of styles avail-. able in higher heels. Making its appearance this year is a very soft finely textured glove-like leather called corkette. One pair of shoes in this material comes in a geranium red color which is es- pecially well with tweeds and plaids. Another square-vamped pump with a spectator look comes in curry calf and features little per- formations on the toe. Curry col- ored leather, buffed and grained, is found again in a light spectator pump. Especially good with spring navy blues is a pointed pump in soft navy blue kid, banded in dark red leather. This shoe also sports a very narrow delicate looking heel. A particularly striking combina- tion is found in a pump of green absinthe calfskin and silk shan- tung print in which the color of the leather predominates in the print. A matching calfskin bag and an umbrella of the shantung print are also available. The perennial spring favor- ite, black patent leather, is also being shown widely. A new innovation in the shoe fashion world are the city flats which provide both comfort and style for the wearer. For cut and polish they are the equal of opera pumps, but the heels are one inch slivers of leather. One' especially good-looking pair of these flat shoes come in flax-covered calf- skin.. This four ounce wonder shoe fits the foot like a glove. Black patent leather has also been made into a variey of other styles with the high-heeled bare- foot'sandel being very popular for evening wear. Although many of the ideas for shoe fashions are imported from all over the world, most of them are born right here in the United States. For example the baby-doll and the wedge heel which enjoyed such popularity several years ago came from New York, the open-toe shoe from Miami and casual footwear from California. Every shoe style is carefully planned, sometimes as much as a year or more before it appears in the stores. By ELAINE EDMONDS The big hat is making fashion1 hews this spring. Most popular of the big hats of this season is the new bumper or tambourine shape. This style is worn perfectly straight on the head and usually covers the wear- er's hairline, ending just a little above the eyebrows. This new forward look goes es- pecially well with the narrow straight line which is the sil- houette for this spring. The big wide hats are prettiest when worn with unbroken lines and big, plain earrings. Many chapeaus this season make use of the popular colors of navy and the beige and brown tones. The basic colors of black and white are also featured again this year. One new combination which is fast gaining in popularity is that of beige and white. The ever-popu- lar yellows and reds are also good at this time. Straw is the principle fabric being used, but this year it lacks the flower trimmings which were so prominent last spring. Milan and a new-comer, balibuntl, are the straws which are taking the lead in hat designs. Hat trimmings this spring are of a variety of fabrics. Very smart 4 are the sheer materials such as tulle, chiffon, maline and various types of veiling. Grosgrain and other types of ribbon are also used a great deal.. One especially attractive bump- er hat in light gray balibuntl straw features a band of chiffon in tones ranging from white to charcoal; gray. In addition to the new bumper hat, the large cartwheel and sailor is] still remain at the top of the hat fashion parade. For those women who prefer smaller hats, the pill box and beanie styles are available in a variety of colors and designs. As to the wearing of hats fash- ion experts advise that in town a hat be worn with street clothes in the daytime. Hats worn with dinner dresses or suits are intended to remain in place during the evening.
