The first harbinger of
spring is neither that curi-
ous green shoot nor prom-
ising mild day. Rather, the
earliest sign is to be found
in fashion magazines and
shop windows where the
most striking of the new
season's styles are shown,
often while snow still cov-
ers the ground. Most not-
able of spring fashion
offerings is the slim, un-
belted sheath dress topped
by its own pert jacket,
cropped at Empire length.
