HILL AUDITORIUM Design Prize Presented To 'T' Grads Two University graduates won $500 Honorable Mention in a re- cent building-design contest. Robert Metcalf, B.Arch., '50, and Tivadar Balogh, B.Arch., '52, won the award for their design of a community youth center for south- ern Michigan. The contest was sponsored by the Architectural Forum and the Ferro Corp. of Cleveland, and called for the use of porcelain ena- mel in the building design. New Ideas The purpose of the contest was1 to obtain new ideas for architects, technicians, educators, and civic leaders in the use of this new material, and the contest was divided into two divisions, one for the community youth centers, and the other for elementary schools. Concerning the contest, Metcalf emphasized, "The need for com- munity centers is very great, and thought must be given to the kind of building suitable for the needs of adolescents." "We do too many buildings for teen-agers in terms of primary colors. What they need, really, is more toned-down surroundings." Sophisticated Metcalf explained that they tried to achieve somewhat of a "sophisticated feeling," something "which the adolescents can grow into as they grow up, yet some- thing which they don't feel out of place in." Metcalf added that they had spent about a week of intensive work on the project. However, he added that it is not unusual to spend 15 hours a day or more on such a project. Balough added further comment on the building, "The structure was to be something which would inspire the imagination of the adolescent." 'Delight' "The building was to possess a certain delight, both in struc- ture and color." This "delight" is illustrated by the dark blue-green and white color combinations, with varying sizes of material units to "create a faceted texture pattern." Prof. Walter B. Sanders, Chair- man of the Dept. of Architecture, commented on the two winners, both visiting lecturers at the Uni- versity, "They had a lot of nat- ural ability. "While their particular work is presently in the residential field, their previous training at the Uni- versity to their excellence of per- formance in applying design prin- ciples." Prof. Sanders summed up his comment by adding, "We are just- ly proud of them."
