A - FRIDAY, MARCH 2, 1956 'TWE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE THRE. ^ 'NOT JUST A FIGUREHEAD': Air Force ROTC Commander Finds Freedom Aloft BY DAVID BROWN Don't blame Richard A. Little, '51, if at times he sounds like an air force recruiting sergeant, be- cause flying for him means free- dom and adventure. Little, present Wing Commander of the University's Air Force ROTC unit, feels there is nothing like soaring through the air with sensitive controls at your finger- tips. "It's really wonderful when you get up there," he exclaimed. "I like to be my own boss, and up there I've got the whole sky." However, the air force didn't always attract his attention. "I originally joined the AFROTC in order to' keep out of the draft like a lot of the other fellows." But once he has signed on the dotted line, the unit kept him pretty busy. His present duty of Cadet Wing Commander isn't just a figurehead position either. "My staff, consisting of five to six men, and I formulate the basic policies for the cadet corp. We set up regulations for such things as the honor and demerit system and the proper behavior for the cadets."' Testimony to Little's fine work is the fact he has been elected to the Arnold Air Society, a national air force honorary and has receiv- ed the AFROTC Distinguished Ca- det Award. Recently he was tap- TV Features IU' Students Theme of today's Student Samp- ler presentation will be "Univer- sity annual student organizations," to be broadcast at 7:30 p.m. over WPAG-TV, Channel 20. "I really like the position of Cadet Wing Commander, as I find it extremely worthwhile for ad- ministration experience. It's a real problem knowing how to I 11 Ann Arbor Zonl aClub. But desk work isn't what he has in mind for. his futurethree or more years in the service. "At camp last summer in Minneapolis, Minn., I had a chance to go up and get the feel of a jet. "You just can't imagine the smoothness, -and there is nothing to be scared of, absolutely noth- ing," he related. "You have the world of confidence in your plane and pilot." "I told my pilot that I was in- ~tersted in aerobatics, and was I askig for it! There I was going through some nice easy rolls, and all I could see was blue and green all in one mass. When we fin- ally pulled up, it felt as if,I was going through the seat." This experience was enough proof that- jet dying was for him. "I love speed, and I believe the only way is to reach the top of the heap. There is nothing that can beat the jet." Little's already bellowing inter- est in the air force was furthered alog by Prof. Harry C. Carver, of the literary college. Prof. Carver, who Little calls the most unfor-, getable,.person he has ever met, asked him last spring vacation to take a trip to Holoman Air Force, Base, New Mexico. "There we saw a demonstration of guided missiles. Some of the work in connection with the mis- siles had been done by Prof. Carver, and he took me along for the ride," Little explained. "I was treated like a king at -Holoman, because no, one knew exactly who I was. So I played the role and took advantage of a wonderful experience." "A feature of the adventurous tour came when Prof. Carver and he visited theAir Force Academy at Denver. From there they flew home while Little had the oppor- tunity of doing the navigating. Despite his enthusiasm for jet flying and the service in general, Little still has some doubts about making the air force his career. "I have a three year tour of duty following graduation as things stand right now. However, I might extend it a couple of years more if I can get into jet flight training. I pray it will work out, but I'm not sure I can con- quer flight school. "In any case, if I'm put behind a desk, it will be sales management for me."
