MOST kXTRAORDINARY MOTION PICTUREI By RICHARD TAUB Although the story that Brent Mattes, '58E, focuses his tele- scope on the Arb during warm nights isn't true, he did at one time "help to chaperone" a party at the sorority house across the street. However, this was an unusual occasion. The soft-spoken sopho- more is an avid amateur astrono- mer. "I always wanted to look at the stfars, but I realized that the only way I could was if I built my own telescope." He started work on the instrument in his sophomore year in high school. It is made up of parts from such things as wash- ing machines and a tank turret. Ground His Own Mattes also ground his own 6" mirror. This is done by rubbing the mirror over another piece of glass which is mounted on a solid base. "You keep working around it and surprisingly it comes out concave." He spent about 60 hours grinding it to the right shape. Except for the mirror and lenses, the instrument looks little like the conventional telescope. A long wooden board replaces the usual tube. "I have a big, long jet-black tube at home, but it was too big to lug all the way from Oregon. The equipment for the scope cost between $40 and $50. A com- parable instrument would sell com- mercially for about $300. His major astronomical interest at the moment is sunspots. There is an unusually large amount of large sunspots showing for this time of year. - Kept His Silence Brent hails from The Dalls, Oregon, a town near Portland. He came to the University because, "It has a good engineering school and I wanted to go someplace in the East, although I find it's better not to say that here." A physics and math major, he City Seeks Administrator Ann Arbor remains today with- out a prospect for the post of city administrator, but "the search is continuing," according to Alder- man Russell Burns. Burns is chairman of a special City Coun- cil committee created to find a qualified man to head Ann Arbor's administrative departments. At an emergency meeting of the committee Monday, the refusal of George F. Liddle, City Manager of Muskegon, to accept the post here, was discussed. The 54-year-old Muskegon man- ager presently receives a salary of $15,000.
