Paulus Unbeaten A third unbeaten skein was pre- served as sixth singles man, Pete Paulus, continued his steady and devastating play to outclass Harry Brandt, 6-3, 6-2. Attaining his peak ability only Friday against Jerry Parchute, Mark Jaffe indicated that he can maintain a high level of perform- ance as he overcame one of the most reknowned of the Illini, Rog- er Bielefeld, 9-7, 6-7, in the sec- ond singles match. Army returnee, Fred Most, found his Wolverine opponent, Dick Potter, just as troublesome as some of his commanding officers. Potter utilized his jet-propelled serve to outscore Most, 6-3, 6-3, in third singles. Michigan's Bob Paley, in the fif th singles competition, rebound- ed from his first defeat of the sea- son suffered at Indiana to subdue John Greenleaf. The first doubles combination of MacKay and Potter, one of Michigan's prime hopes in the Big Ten tournament revitalized from its loss to Indiana and fought to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 triumph over the Woods-Most duo. In the other doubles matches Mann and Nederlander rallied to top Bielefeld and Greenleaf, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Paley and Jaffe de- feated Brandt and Van Tine, 6-3, 6-3. M' Diamond men Lose Two to OSU; Finish Fifth in Conference Standings Special to The Daily DETROIT-The Wolverine golf- ers broke out of their recent slump with an impressive 21%/2-112 tri- umph over the University of De- troit yesterday. Lead by the brilliant play of Henry Loeb, who shot a 70-74 for a total of 144, the golfers' chances in the coming Big Ten meet ap- peared to be improving. The overall play yesterday was quite encouraging, especially con- sidering the poor performances re- cently. In addition to the tremen- dous play of Loeb, the perform- ances, of Steve Uzelac, Andy An- drews, and Fred Micklow were very heartening. I STORE 41- HOURS D, A C LY 9 TO (Continued from Page 1) In this first game, Ohio State's Don Kelley put on a one-man hit- ting show, as he collected two' singles, a double, and a home run in five trips to the plate. The second game also saw Mich- igan take a first inning lead which immediately faded. Benedict and Fox walked, Benedict moving to third on an OSU error. Cline again came through with a long' fly, scoring Benedict for the Wol- verines' solitary run. Ohio State's half of the first frame then became a personifi- cation of the style of baseball Michigan was playing. Five Ohio Staters came to gat, two runs scored, but no one got a hit, and no! one could be given an official time at bat. The first two men up, John En- gert and Ron Shay, walked and; were advanced along on a sacri- fice. First baseman Don Kelly then walked, and following this, the first run came across on a passed' ball. Bob Schnabel then blasted the next pitch deep into center- field, forcing Fox to make a bril- liant running catch against the centerfield fance. Shay, on third due to the passed ball, scored easily after the catch, 'M' Loses Chance Shay's score turned out to be the winning run, although Michi- gan had a very good chance, with a man on third and only one away in the third inning, to tie the score. They failed, however, with two men being thrown out on the basepaths. )- Other games in the Big Ten yesterday help to explain, along with the double defeav, why Mich- igan dropped to fifth place. Mich- igan State won two from Indiana, moving them up above the Wolver- ines into a tie for second place with Minnesota. Illinois split a twinbill with Purdue, giving them just a few more percentage points than Michigan and a fourth place berth. Scores for all the final Confer- ence games were; MSC 7-7, In- diana 3-2; Illinois 5-2, Purdue 3-3; Minnesota 10-3, Northwestern 2-4; Wisconsin 4-3, Iowa 1-2. DESERT BOOT 5 :30 Loeb took medalist honor for the meet with his 144, followed by Uze- lac, who shot a 78-75-153. Andrews came in with a fine 72, playing only only in the afternoon round, and Micklow, competing in the morning, performed very well, scoring a 74. For the Titans, Ray Conlon was low man with a 74-77-151. Tom' Chisholn and Ron Stelter hit for 154's, with Tom Watrus and Bill Teifke chipping in with 155 and 156 respectively. Players Alternated In the 36 hole rounds, Coach Bert Katzenmeyer alternated four men in two positions. Bob McMas- ters and Miklow played in the morning round, with McMasters finishing with a fair 77. In the afternoon, Andrews and John Schubeck replaced McMas- ters and Micklow. Schubeck had a disappointing round scoring 79. Skip McMichael and Ken Myers also were not too impressive. Both played the two rounds, McMichaels shooting a 78-82-160 and Myers an 81-80-161. Performance Encouraging Katzenmeyer commented that the meet had answered most of his questions concerning players tc compete in the Big Ten meet. He remarked that the squad's per- formance was encouraging, but that it will have to play at least as well, if not better to threaten for the title. The Wolverines had defeated the Titans earlier this year. Playing on the University Golf course, the golfers overwhelmed the Titans 15-3.
