Ruthven, enjoying his fourth year of retirement, cele- brates his 73rd birthday today. Now living on his estate a half mile north of Dexter, the genial educator still maintains an active life and claims he is "just as busy as ever." Varied Activities At the present he is director of the Ann Arbor Trust Co., a direc- tor of the Cranbrook Institute of Science, and consultant to the University Development Council. Ruthven still spends much of his time raising horses. President of the Morgan Horse Association and a well known Morgan riding horse breeder, he has sold horses from Maine to California during the last 20 years. Belies His Age Although now moving into his 74th year. the University's ex- President belies his age with daily - :_ k / l W 1 ALEXANDER RUTHVEN ... getting younger rides during the spring, summer and autumn months. Ruthven works three afternoons a week in his office at Alumni Hall taking care of Development Coun- cil duties. Speaking slyly of his 73rd birth- day today Ruthven commented that reporters recently have been exaggerating his age. "All last year they said I was 75," he said. Council Sets Fund Awards The Business Administration Student Council recently sent a check for $500 to the Regents in order to establish the Business Ad- ministration Council Student Aid Fund. Awards from the Fund are to be made on the basis of need. Re- cipients must be of good moral character, and must haveda scho- lastic standing not below that re- quired for the degree for which they are enrolled. No Interest The awards are to be given on a grant-in-aid basis. That is, stu- dents receiving money from the fund do not have to pay any in- terest on the money. They shall not be required to sign any con- tract for the repayment of all or any part of it, but shall be under a moral obligation only to repay the money to the fund when they feel that they are able to do so. 'PROMISING' U' Students Get Wilson Fellowships Two University students have been included among the recipi- ents of National Woodrow Wilson Fellowships awarded for the aca- demic year 1955-56. Robert Holloway, Grad., and Laurence Scott, '55, are the Uni- versity's successful candidates for the Wilson Fellowship, a national program. The Fellowships, awarded on a nomination basis, are designed to attract "promising talent" to col- lege or university teaching. It is primarily confined to students with interest in the humanities and social sciences. Will Attend Harvard Scott is an Ann Arbor resident, majoring in Slavic languages, who will attend Harvard University on the Fellowship. He plans to work for his M.A. in Russian language and literature, with teaching in either Slavic or comparative West- ern European literature as his long-range objective. While at the University, Scott has been art editor of Gargoyle, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. Extra-curricular activities have also figured in the University car- eer of Holloway. He has worked on Generation as fiction editor, re- viewed movies for The Michigan Daily, and is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa. A Detroit resident who majored in English Honors, Holloway will take the Fellowship at the Uni- versity of California at Berkeley to work for his master's degree in English. Set Up at Princeton The present Woodrow Wilson program has developed out of a fellowship set up by Princeton University in 1945. It is now ad- ministered nationally by the As- sociation of Universities, the Car-j negie Corporation, and the Gen- eral Education Board. Seven Fellowship students from other undergraduate schools have elected the University for their graduate work.
