The meet was decided in the final match of the afternoon as Il- lini heavyweight Emil Diewald savagely decisioned John Morrow, 14-3. Morrow, who has only been out for wrestling one week, seem- ed to take command of the situa- tion in the opening moments of the match but he tired in the last six minutes and Diewald com- pletely overpowered him. The upset was seen early in the meet as Dan Deppe, wrestling in the 123 pound class, Max Pearson, fighting in the 137 division, and Frank Hirt, in the 130 pound class, failed to win a match. Deppe Edged by Meeks Deepe was beaten by Dick Meeks, Illini senior, who downed him by a slim 4-3 margin. Meeks, who placed second in the Big Ten and third in the NCAA champion- ships, took commaned in the ear- ly minutes of the match to build up a point lead. Deppe fought back but couldn't capture the necessary final point to tie. At 130 pounds. Illini Norb Sar- egnt drew with Hirt, 1-1. Hirt was heavily favored to win but kept losing his man every time he had an opprtunity to score. Pearson was in the same situa- tion as Deppe. Bill Turner, Illi- nois senior letterman, built up a commanding lead and Pearson was unable to overtake him. McMahon Returns to Form Probably the most encouraging thing that happened in the meet was the return of 177-pounder John McMahon to his old wres- tling form. McMahon, who has been sidelined with an injury most of the season, conquered Steve Szabo, 9-4, in a hard fought match. In the 147 and 157 pound divi- sions, captain Andy Kaul and Don Haney were victorious. Kaul con- tinued his dual meet winning streak, having lost only one dual match in his collegiate career, by downing Illini captain Edwin Jack- son. Jackson gained two points early in the match but Kaul gar- nered three points in the closing minutes to win by a one point mar- gin. Haney decisioned Frank Kas- tor. 8-4, for his victory. In the 167 pound division, Mike Rodriguez was decisioned by Lar- ry TenPas, 9-7. TenPas, second place winner in the Western Con- ference championships last year and third place winner in the NCAA. fought off Rodriguez for the win. Although he fought game- ly, TenPas proved to be too much for the Wolverine grappler.. Illini Coach B. R. "Pat" Patter- son depended on the progress of his sophomores and newcomers to carry him through the 1954-55 season. In downing the top-rated Maize and Blue grapplers, the Il- lini, along with Iowa, are looked upon as the toughest competition for the Wolverines in the Confer- ence championships. The loss to the Illini will prob- ably do the Michigan wrestlers some good. After being undefeat- ed so far this season, the grapplers will realize that they are going to have to be sharp for the confer- ence championships. 1 it i { The SHIRT OF 1955 "New in Style" - "New in Collar" Cheese Peanut Delux Super Collosal M Burgers M Burgers M Burgers M Burgers M Burgers M Burgers SOLD EXCLUSIVELY IN ANN ARBOR BY 4fe I & /a' State Street on Campus Made of 100%/c Beef Prepared Fresh Daily DRAKE'S SANDWICH SHOP 709 N.
