THE MICHIGAN DAILY '1.'11'MMSDAY, MARCM 17, 1953 THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY. MARCH 17, 1955 I APHRODITE REIGNS SUPREME: Coeds Bow to Godess of Beauty By ESTHER MARGOLIS Aphrodite, the goddess of na- tural beauty, might turn over on her cloud if she could witness the advancements made by cosmetic manufacturers in furthering femi- nine loveliness and cleanliness. "To enhance the sheen of your hair, try shampoo with color ac- cents. O n e reasonable-priced shampoo is especially designed to bring out highlights in red and brown hair, to lighten blonde tres- ses and to eliminate any yellow discoloration in silver tones. It will not harm or bleach the hair. Conditioners with coloring can be found on the market as a sup- plement to the shampoo. There's usually an uneven coloration in the normal head of hair. The dif- ference in shade is seen between the shaft and the ends of the hair. The new dressing creates an even- ness in color and brings out the natural luster. Wet Hair Vanishes It isn't necessary to go around1 with wet hair after a shampoo. A new spray, now on sale, will dry the hair swifter than nature. Butf 'Good Scents' Attract Males; Floral Fragrances Stressed By MERRILL MARTIN Spring usually makes a young man's fancy turn to love, but the right perfume can make these fancies permanent! Perfume, definitely as import- ant as correct fashions, are just as subject to seasonal change. Here's a preview of some of the fragrances drifting around this season. Floral scents are always popu- lar in the springtime. Some de- lightful ones are "Lavendar" by Yardley and Dior's "Miss Dior" which is a blend of "sixty dif- ferent flower notes." Other ever-popular floral scents, their names derived from their odors, are "Lilac," "Gardenia," "Heliotrope," "Blue Hyacinth" and "La Rose." "Un Air Em- baum6," (fragrant breeze), is a creation of Riquad which is per- fect for the girl who wants to ap- pear as the proverbial breath of spring, To match the new sport fash- ions, there are such woody and spicy blends as Bendel's "Un Peu d'Elle and Faberge's always-popu- lar "Woodhue" and "Straw Hat." For delightful spring evenings there's a range of scents from floral to the ultra-sophisticated oriental blends. A new fragrance "Accomplice" by Cody is "warm, fresh . . . and just a bit myster- ious," ideal for those "special" nights. From this preview it seems as if the perfume manufacturers have created fragrances for every mood, occasion and personality. A good reason why it won't be difficult to use "good scents" this spring. Then try another spray that will revive and wave the hair, while cleansing. The face must not be neglected, either. Spot sticks applied, before the foundation make-up, cover blemishes, lines or cracks. One brand contains an antiseptic which will heal the blemish while concealing it. As a base try a new velvety liq- uid foindation make-up. This preparation's chief selling point is that it doesn't change color under different lightingconditions. After the foundation, the fea- tures come in for their share of attentin. Accent the eyes with effective opalescent eyeshadow, which is toned with silver. Be- sides the ordinary small case, it's now put out in atube for greater convenience. Eyelashes may be emphasized with a colored pomade instead of mascara. This cream will not rub into the eyes and has a unique effect when used with an eye- lash curler. Rouge for Naturalness Liquid rough is still the best compliment for the dheeks, it creates a more natural look. There is now a concern manu- facturing two lipsticks of the same shade, one for day and one for evening wear, because lights have a different effect on the lip color. For example, clear red lipstick appears orange at night. To avoid this change, -manufacturers sell two lipsticks in a combination package so that the color selected will always appear the same tone. Indelible Accessory Women now enjoy the advant- age of indelible lipsticks. One company has introduced an un- dercoat that will insure indelibil- ity of any lipstick. In the form of R-Tone for red, V-tone for blue-red and T-V for orange, this undercoat is also worn alone. The hands are another focal point. The skin should be lubri- cated with a whipped hand cream. Coming in a can with a spout, like men's shaving cream, this rea- sonably-priced ($1.25) 1o t i o n works into the hands, is absorbed and is non-sticky. Hand lotion is a must every time the hands are washed. To aid this habit, manufacturersI put on the market foil-wrapped purse packets of cream. Designed for the "use once and throw away" idea, the packets come in boxes of 96 packages for only $1. An application of cologne-foam all-body lotion, scented with dif- ferent scents, completes the beau- ty treatment. But for the dieting coed, a clin- ically tested and approved body lotion is available which will mas- sage and make the skin firm after loss of weight! Dietary aids and cosmetics have been found to mix successfully. What the next move is. Aphrodito only knows. It's doubtful that she will even tell. But it will be discovered next season, to be sure! BALFOUR COMPANY 1321 SOUTH UNIVERSITY "On South U. just around the corner from Washtenaw" By BEA MINKUS Crinolines, one of the most po- pular of feminine frivolities, are by no means a new invention of fashion. Petticoats worn today were the style -of the court of Queen Eliza- beth and James I. Crinolines in vogue during that era were sup- ported by whalebone and made of horsehair." For years they were a leading branch of the steel trade. In 1856, the crinoline invaded the wardrobes of women of all ranks. Reaching pretentious di- mensions, they proved very incon- venient to both the wearer and to those near her. These immense bell-shaped pet- ticoats left the fashion scene about 1866. About three years ago, the ad- vent of the tiny waist and billow- ing circular skirts caused the crin- oline to regain popularity. A host of styles and brand names ap- peared on the market, the most effective being the nylon horse- hair type. Since the price was too high to accommodate most budgets, many variations have recently appeared, offering attractive stiff crinolines at more reasonable rates. Along with the nylon horsehair crinoline, popular for its lasting stiffness, other nylon styles are. big sellers. Tricot, taffeta net and crepe have been transformed into Where To Buy Students may call the Wom- en's Desk of The Daily to find out where clothing may be pur- chased. Straight Tops The trend in crinolines for spring is the straight top, hip flair with embroidered *eyelet. Novelty crinolines are also shown. Fancy fringed bottoms with dangling charms and fruits, along with the feminine multi-colored ruffles are eye-catchers. Although many heavier coeds wish to wear crinolines, it's sug- gested they avoid the gathered- waist style and stick to the smooth hip-line petticoat which is more flattering to the waist. Slim girls can choose from the wide variety of slips without fear of over ac- centuated hips. Male Viewpoint In asking several. University males for their opinion of this fashion, a wide difference of atti- tudes was discovered. One student denounced them. He said that he couldn't get close enough to his date when she wore so many petticoats. Another re- marked that crinolines were made. "tg deceive the opposite 8ex." "They make it difficult," he said, "to determine just where the co- ed ends and slip begins." The general concensus, however, was that crinolines should be worn in moderation. A gentle bil- lowing effect is graceful and at- tractive, but an excess is disliked because "it makes coeds look like barrels." In keeping with the current trend, beach jackets are also gaily printed. Outstanding is a brightly polka-dotted terry cloth. Another terry jacket, covered with tiny flowers, has the added attraction of a hood. I. '+6':W666 '.}''. .:nAr.; S61666 __ * *?
