THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 1955 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGZ M THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 1955 THE MiCHiGAN DAILY Paflu a ~a w Fashion Experts Give Tips to Miss Shortie May Add. To Height by Illusion Tall, Short Coeds By JOI JACKSON and GREG ARGUS Miss 5'2" or under, who dreams of being tall and slim as a New York model, may look more like one this year. Here's how . .. To create the illusion of height the short coed should emphasize the straight lines in her clothing. This effect can be achieved by dressing in single color outfits. For example, a navy skirt and sweater. A cor- bination of dark, rather than light and dark separates, should be worn. A "shortie" should try to avoid anything that will cut her in half. "Chopping off" in the middle makes her appear shorter than ever. Therefore, the "half-pint" coed should not wear wide belts. Keep Skirts Simple The short, chubby student should keep her skirts as simple as possible-either very straight or very full. Contrary to popular opinion, the full skirt is a good camouflage, because the viewer can't differentiate between the girl and the skirt. Beware of pockets and flounces around the hips, since they draw unnecessary attention to this area. Over-Blouses "Long, lean and linen is the key to over-blouses this spring," quips a national fashion magazine. Hip-hugging with tiny sleeves, the blouses come in a gay variety of colors, materials and patterns. Pink violet, newest color discovery of the season, is being shown in horizontal and vertical stripes and flower prints. Broadcloth and lin- en' are featured fabrics. Collars take onit novel air with a sailor's knot or a cardigan ef- fect with buttoned placket. Trends for a long, long line are being carried over to sweaters as well. Evidence is ,the long-line v- necked cashmere sweater in pink- violet by Maurice Handler. On land or on sea, the nautical look is yours in a still-in-style mid- dy blouse. Styles seem to be roll- ing back further and further to the roaring twenties. Large plaids and checks should also be avoided because they cut down height. Coats shorten a woman if they are not the right style. Here the new straight line comes to the res- cue!* The princess style in coats and dresses is excellent for the short girl. Following the girl's fig- ure, it lengthens her-merely an optical illusion, but it works! Scale To Size The illusion will be spoiled if it's supplemented with large ac- cessories. The short coed should scale everything to her size. If she fails to do this, she succeeds in nothing but looking incongru- ous. Hence, bags, earrings, brace- lets, rings and such should be small. Never before has the 5'2" coed been presented with such a selec- tion from which to choose her wardrobe. This year, she'll find the popular torso and princess line School Dress Will Feature Feminine Air, By SANDRA CUTLER Your school wardrobe this spring will feature that "feminine" look coupled with an air of simplicity. Watch for the cotton jumper! One full-skirted jumper can be made into a "regular" skirt by detaching the buttoned straps. Linen jumpers with straight styled skirts will also be popular.{ In blouse wear, the ever-popu- lar sleeveless, doll-sleeve and the three-quarter sleeve will again be prominent. Materials for the blous- es will be mainly cotton or linen. In skirts pay attention to the drop-waistline. This type skirt features a small waistband fol- lowed by another band of material at the hips. The material of the second band is vertically pleated to the hem. Full, multi-colored denim skirts and straight linen skirts will be other favorites. Every spring brings another col- lection of co-ordinates; this sea- son's no exception. These separ- ates are invaluable for interchang- ing and multiplying a wardrobe. Many of the co-ordinates con- sist of checked doll-sleeve blouses which match in color their plaid skirts. Prints will sneak into the ward- robe more than ever before. Most of the' designs highlight flowers,. figurines, checks and abstract geo- metrical forms. Colors Help The colors are more vivid this season with shades of red, blue, avocado, and brown helping to make the short coed stand out among the crowd. No more worries about blending colors for that even look. Nothing could be more attractive than a brown patterned skirt and a beige tailor blouse, accented at the waist by a narrow orange belt. Select a Middy The middy styles are still here for the lucky gal who can wear them so handsomely, namely, short women. Big sailor collars with huge white bows at the neck are available for these coeds. MostI of them top straight line skirts, although flared middy outfits are featured. Let's face it! The 5'2" coed isn't over shadowed by her 5'7" sister any longer. With full skirts, cover- ing about four crinoline petticoats, vivacious colors, comfortable-fit- ting blouses and dresses, little Miss 5'2" will make a big impression. ESQUIRE STYLES... as you like them. This Spring the theme is BRIGHT LIGHTS. EXTRA LONG, LOVELY-Joanne Robinson, '58, is wearing a pale grey flannel suit designed with her extra inches in mind. The large collar of the long fitted jacket is tiedwitha flashing silk scarf. TREND TOWARD SLEEK AND SLIM: Long-Stemmed Coed Can Solve Problem By Adopting New Dropped Waistlines B right colored accessories Lighter weight clothes Lustrous finishes , i By MARIAN ELLIAS Betsy Ross Shop I3-IS NICKELS ARCADE Many of this spring's best fash- ions are well-suited for the tall girl. One of the biggest problems for the over 5' 7" coed is shortwaisted dresses. Now this problem can be solved by the dropped waistline of the popular torso dress. In this design, the dress is closely fitted from the bodice down to the hipline. Gathers start at the hips and billow into a skirt that takes petticoats easily. This style gives a tiny-waisted effect and also cuts the illusion of height by shortening the length from waist to hemline. Cummerbunds and crushed belts can be worn strikingly by the long-waisted girl. The straight-line dress which can be belted to form a waistline is also a good design. Contour belts in the latest spring shades- tangerine, pale blue, yellow and coffee frost-are particularly suit- ed for this purpose. Full Skirts Gain "Sheaths are in the minority," commented the owner of a cam- pus dress shop. "The majority of tall girl dresses are coming in with full skirts." Examples of this type are the Marion McCoy Cali- fornia cottons. ' Miss McCoy is one designer who specializes in dresses for the tall girl. Her cottons are shown every- where this spring-even in cock- tail and evening gowns. A local store features suits for the 5'8" to 6' figure in soft grays and blues. Boxy and fitted jackets have the necessary added inches in sleeve length. The skirts are also longer-another must for the tall girl. Nautical Trend Seen The nautical influence is seen this spring in the boat necklines and sailor suits. The standaway collar and the boat neckline are especially good for the tall stu- dent who has a swan-like neck. Appealing to the lover of big col- lars and bows are the sailor dresses. Proportioned especially for tall girls are this spring's handbags. Totes, bucket-bags, and attache cases are large and roomy. In black patent and imported Italian leath- er, they are just right for the fashion conscious University coed. Gloves Complete Outfits Plaid and polka-dotted gloves complemelt solid color dresses for important occasions. Striking white gloves with embroidered flowers at the fingertips add to the slender hands of the tall girl. Ceramic earrings and cuff links of the popular chunky type are nice for the statuesque figure. The colorful ropes seen on campus are now available in spring shades of tangerine, aqua, coral and yellow. The two inch slender heel is the most popular height with tall girls, said a shoe salesman. This sculp- tured heel and variations of the Louis the fourteenth style are seen with the pointed toe. The newest shoe fashions are shown in luster kid, which has a luminous satin-like finish. Com- plementing the spring shoe colors of avocado, blond and mother-of- pearl are the new stretchy nylons which fit the long legs of the tall coed perfectly.
