PACE EIGHT 'I SE MICHIGAN DAILY TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22,1955 BRANDEIS HOUSE: Unique Campus Coop Provides for Family Housing .m. ,,,. .,...,,.. ...... r ..............w+.. .. .. ... ..., vx By DONNA HANSON '> Brandeis House is unique as the only campus co-operative resi- dence unit which provides housing for married couples with children. Named after former Supreme Court Associate Justice Louis D. Brandeis, the co-op was purchased a year ago by the Inter-Coopera- tive Council in an attempt to es- tablish a non-segregated co-op for married students. It has now pro- gressed from its experimental stage to a permanent fixture in the ICC set-up. Indicates Demand "One thing the Brandeis pro- ject will show up is the tremen- dous demand for this type of housing," Jack Hilberry, former ICC president, said. "We have shown that it does work," he em- phasized. Brandeis House is based upon the general principle of the co- operative,- movement to provide housing at a minimum cost. In a co-op, everyone shares the work and in benefits derived from the house. When ICC bought what is now the Brandeis House, it was partly divided into apartments. The group foresaw a tremendous op- portunity to provide housing for married students, especially for so-called "undesirable" minority groups. Too Many Applicants "Without any advertising, many more couples applied than we could accomodate," Hilberry said. In order to make Brandeis liv- able, ICC staged a couple of work holidays. Other co-opers came in a group and, working with the couples, did whatever unprofes- sional jobs they could. The neces- sary outside professional assist- ance was paid for by ICC. "This type of housing had been tried before on campus, but a com- munity eating arrangement didn't help its success, and it didn't last very long," said Frank Naka- mura, president of Brandeis. "Most people are probably at- tracted to the co-op arrangement for financial reasons," Nakamura added. "Rent only runs 75 to 80% compared to rates prevalent in Ann Arbor." Cooperation Is Rule Brandeisers are also required to "co-operate" in their house by working eight hours a week. As for compatability of inter- racial inhabitants in Brandeis House, "frictions do occur and are felt more personally than in a group of 20 or 30 people," Naka- mura commented. "I think this plan will work out in time with experience. It is a co-op like any other co-op on cam- pus, yet our particular house and type of living is unique," he con- ADVENTURE TRAVEL to every corner of the globe .
