Shaw Group To Perform Robert Shaw's Chorale and Or- chestra will perform at 8:30 p.m. Monday in Hill Auditorium. Selections by De Victoria, Wil- liam Byrd, Vecchi, Bach, Schubert, Avshalomoff and Johann Strauss will be included in Monday's pro- gram. At Pomona College in Clare- mont, Calif., Shaw had his first experience with choral music. Im- pressed with his talent, Fred War- ing invited Shaw to conduct the Waring Glee Club in New York. Shaw's now-famous Chorale was formed in 1941, but its opera- tions were interrupted in 1945 by his naval service. After Shaw's discharge, he reformed the Chor- ale and became Director of Chor- al Activities at the Julliard School of Music. The Robert Shaw Chorale has performed at Town Hall, Carnegie Hall, Riverside Church and the Metropolitan Opera House. It has also sung under the direction of Leopold Stowski, Arturo Tos- canini and Serge Koussevitzky. The group has attracted wide recognition through records and concerts. Shaw is noted for his in- tense rehearsals, sometimes direc- ting the chorus for an hour and a half with only a five minute re- cess. He explains, "I'm ashamed of myself after every rehearsal. I think you can only inspire a group when you have their respect, and they respect only dignity, but sometimes I forget myself!" Tickets priced at $3, $2.50, $2 and $1.50 are on sale ,in the Uni- versity Musical Society office in Burton Tower.
