WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1954 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE TIM WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 1, 1954 TIlE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE THREW __ __ Two 'M' Cage ContestsMay Be Televised *ToUELRUI flILr, Cagers Drill for Pitt Battle; Kramer Rounds Into Shape Wilson's OK Needed To Put Gopher MSC Tilts on TV By STEVE HEILPERN Don't be too surprised if Ron Kramer enters the Michigan start- ing lineup soon-this time on the basketball court. Although it was plainly visible during last Tuesday night's fresh- men-varsity contest that' Kramer was way out of shape, Coach Bill Perigo is very high on his chances of breaking into the starting five this season. "Ron's quick changeover from football to basketball had to have ill effects at first!" said Perigo, and this was evaenced by his legs." rgDifferent Muscles Used The mentor was referring to the many times that Kramer slipped on the hardwood floor in last week's tuneup contest. "This was due to Kramer's. lack of control over certain leg muscles. Football and basketball are miles apart when it comes to the use and function of certain muscles, and I'm confident that practice will -ke all the difference in the A Wld for him." Kramer, a remarkable jumper for his size (six feet, three inches) can be used at either center or forward. He will definitely see some action Saturday night in the Wolverines' opener against Pitt. Another football end, Tom Maentz, is also rounding into shape slowly. Since Maentz did not go out for the freshman team last year, Perigo has no personal "line" on his potentialities, but will give him a full trial this sea- son. Maentz will probably see lim- ited action at forward in the Pitt clash. Fast Break Clicks As far as the practice game went in itself, Perigo could draw no conclusions. "Our fast break was working well for this time of year, but our defense wasn't too sharp; however, I've discovered that a game of this sort is not necessarily a criteria for the coming season." Basketball coaches throughout the country will be stressing foul shooting more this year because of the new foul rule. The new NCAA ruling specifies that the player fouled gets a second try if he sinks his first attempt. He is always awarded two shots, as in the past, if he is fouled in the act of shoot- ing; and all fouls in the last three minutes of play are followed by two throws from the 15foot mark. *wm feat The unveiling of Michigan's 1955 swimming team will take place at the 20th annual Michigan AAU meet on Friday afternoon and evening. With preliminary races slated to start at 4:00 p.m., the 8:00 p.m. program will include the finals of the AAU events and an elaborate water carnival. The University of Michigan may have two of its home basketball games televised nationally over the Columbia Broadcasting System Coach Bill Perigo stated yesterday, pending official word from Tug Wilson, Big Ten Commissioner. The contests, presently sched- uled as night games on February 19 and March 5, are against Min- nesota and Michigan State. The Maize half of the Michigan aggregation downed the Blue for its second win in the two meets, this time by a score of 58/2 to 39%f. Loken was happier with this week's showing than last's. "The team showed an overall improvement," he said. "But we still need work on routines." Lo- ken felt the best event this week to be the side-horse, won by Tony San Antonio of the Maize team. The husky veteran is still bothered by a wrist injury, and should im- prove even more when he fully recovers. Freshmen Allan Cornwall and Ed Gagnier took one-two on the parallel bars. Gagnier is still suf- fering from a pulled shoulder- muscle, sustained earlier this sea- son. Nick Wiese was the standout for the Blue aggregation, winning the flying-rings event and the free ex- ercise. He also took a second to Adams on the high-bar. CBS Television plans to cover Saturday Big Ten tilts during the height of the basketball season, giving its viewers a chance to see each team in the conference at least once on its home court. Cer- tain problems of broadcasting from East Lansing and Lafayette have been encounteredwhich may keep Michigan State and Purdue from sharing in the video honors on home floors. Although still tentative, it is almost a certainty that Michigan will have its game with Minnesota televised. There is a good chance that the MSC contest will be- on the air waves, too, although the network has another basketball game planned for the same time. Coach Perigo - also stated that the time alloted to the teams be- tween halves would be increased from ten to fifteen minutes in the televised games.
