Over Problems
Although an atmosphere o
smoke hangs heavily upon it, the
Student Publications Building at
420 Maynard St., is essentially a
clean, well-lighted place.
The Building, which houses
Gargoyle, Generation, The Michi-
gan Daily and 'Ensian, is notorious
for the chainsmoking would-be
journalists which turn out four of
the finest publications in the
country. It is famous, however, for
its excellent shop, including the
best equipment obtainable and
topnotch personnel to man it.
It is even more famous for a long
tradition of publications freedom
for a Board in Control which does
not control but rather gives
sought-after guidance and which
steers its four charges through the.
troubled waters of financial diffi-
culties and scrapes with the Uni-
versity Administration.

ALTHOUGH THE editors of the
publications share in common the
building's facilities, their problems
and aims differ widely.
The Generation editor is in
charge of producing one of the
many small literary magazines
aimed at giving new writers a
chance to see their things in print.
Beyond this altruistic desire, how-
ever, is a recognition that art is
for the whole campus, not just the
English majors and the architec-
ture and design students, and that
this community will not waste its
time on anything not essentially
fine.
In addition to the . obvious
problems created by this aim-
those of finding young . artists
producing high calibre works--
Generation fights a constant
battle with red ink, for the ad-
vertising possibilities of such a
publication are small, and it is
up to the readers to pay their
own way.
Its office mate, Gargoyle, works
in a different medium. Because
it is hard to be funny four times a
year for some thirty odd pages, the
campus humor magazine fluctu-
ates between being terribly funny
and just plain terrible. It is gen-
erally terribly funny, but only be-
cause its editors take the job of
being funny very seriously.
Gargoyle is able to laugh at
much of the campus community.
On occasion, it has skimmed too
dangerously near the borderline of
"bad taste"-the bane of humor
editors everywhere-and has been
forced to take up lodgings outside
the Publications Building. It has
been back inside the building now
for several years, to the general
relief of its editorial staff.
'ENSIAN EDITORS fight a con-
tinual round of battles, generally
with campus organizations who be-
lieve the entire book should be
built around their particular con-
tributions to the University.
Fortunately, 'Ensian people
come into their positions armed
with aspirin, resistance to mi-
graine headaches and a firm de-
termination to make the year-
book a first-class record of Mi-
chigan life. To do this, they bat-
tie with press deadlines, turn
amateur photographers rapidly
into professionals and sell ad-
vertising enough to keep the
book within the pocket range of
all students.
Unlike the other publications.
The Daily is called upon to come
out every day. Its aim is to bring
news to the community-not sim-
ply local news but Associated Pres,.
coverage of national and interna-
tional news as well. Of equal im-
portance to Daily staffers, howev-
er, is the editorial page.
Working on the assumption that
events in themselves are meaning-
less, The Daily tries for objective
interpretation on the news pages,
subjective interpretation and eval-
uation on the editorial page. Fre-
quently, the effort to be the Uni-
versity Administration's best friend
and severest critic leads to com-
plications.
Such complications, however,
have not yet led to the loss of,
