PAGEFOUCI R THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1954 SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 7. 1954 THE MICHIGAN DAILY i RACKHAM EXHIBIT: Prof. La More and Brush View American Southwest Tweeds Jumpers Highlight Fall F At Rackham Galleries; WORK OF CHET LA MORE. By STUART ROSS TJHIS IS A collection of oil paint- ings, caseins, water colors, and wood and steel sculpture, all the result of a sabbatical leave spent in New Mexico by Prof. Chet La More of the School of Architecture and Design. I don't know whether or not all of the works presented were done on location, nor have I ever so much as set foot in New Mexico, yet I felt that all the mood of this region, with its occult superstitions and infinite desolation were pres- ent here. I think the artist under- stood what he saw and understands what he paints about what he saw. La More'snpainted desert is not Disney's by any means. Instead he somehow, and I think rightly so, equates these desolate landscapes with a kind of lunar topography. There is an extraterrestrial airless- ness in the paintings, a feeling that if you could enter this world you would weigh one sixth what you do now. And while the Babel effect of the first nighters did not prevent me from feeling an eerie quiet about the paintings, it did keep me from holding the feeling long enough to decide whether this was a result of the intensely low-key color, or a special kind of attenuated abstract shape, or neither. THE CASEINS and water colors were not so effective for me as the oils, perhaps because there did not seem to be the same incis- iveness of shapes and lines in the former. This incisiveness is the quality that carries most of the paintings. *Without it there is a vagueness of space, a surfacing of the color."With it there is a clear expression of infinity, a carefully arranged other-world of abstract shapes. The sculpture is more like fun. There are - natural wood forms slightly revised, stained and pol- ished and called wonderful names like "Fox Fetish With Built - in Brain Box." In these there is a true feeling of extension into the mind of the primitive artist and at the same time a personal witty in- ventiveness and a careful selec- tion of subtle form. There are works in. welded steel, most of them composed, of all things, of cement nails, that have an excit- ing spiky quality, and a few in steel to which brightly colored enamels have been added. A peep-show of Kodachromes tak- en in New Mexico, and a case-full of native artifacts are presented as part of the exhibit, and while I liked this bit of reality, I liked more the reality of Chet La More's Southwest. V -Daily-Lynn Wallas DESOLATE LANDSCAPES WITH A KIND OF LUNAR TOPOGRAPHY AND SCULPTURE WHERE THERE IS A TRUE FEELING OF EXTENSION INTO THE MIND OF THE PRIMITIVE ARTIST GIVE TO THE DAILY FIRE RELIEF FUND - -- British Look, Natural Lines Emphasized By ROZ SHLIMOVITZ It's the British tweed look for '54. While in women's wear it's exemplified by tweed skirts, suits, jumpers and casual dresses, the British natural trend has com- pletely monopolized the collegiate clothing market for men. All the new three-button jack- ets emphasize the high lapel and the natural shoulder with little or no padding. One merchant even proudly displayed a four- button jacket, which he terms the newest item in men's wear this fall. He has only one such jacket in stock. American manufacturers have included the change. or ticket pocket, a customary British de- tail, above the regular pocket, and have added a back vent which ex- tends higher than on the two-but- ton jacket., Black-Brown Tweeds Charcoal greys, leaders in the _ color field for a number of years, have to take a backseat this Fall to black-brown when it comes to tweed sport jackets. Banker's charcoal continues to be the predominant color in trousers and one male "fashion plate" contended, "It's the only color." However a good percentage of students still favor the Khaki sun tans. Three-piece suits, (vest includ- ed), cut in the natural lines, are flourishing once again. Both men and women have taken a liking to the Shetland sweaters fashioned with the round, crewnecks. Jumpers Become Date Attire Coeds have always favored co- ordinates, and they were quick to make the jumper, a basic item in their fall wardrobe. The sleeve- less style which found its way out of the classroom last spring when American and Frence de- signers revamped it, can be pur- chased in any number of styles in- dicating fall fashion trends-the narrow sheath skirt, the long fit- ted middy waistline or the full crinolined skirt. Perfect for date wear, the jump- er can be dressed up with long ropes of beads, making a comeback following their popularity in the flapper days. Covered with a topper, the jumper takes the place of a suit. PRINTS AND TWEEDS-For even a print cut to a V in both the I currently popular brown tweed Hargadon. -Daily-Lynn Wallas FOUR-BUTTON JACKET-The newest men's wear item to reach Ann Arbor as worn by Clair Smith.
