N .:'-: RANGE OFFENSE-Drawn by Illini football coach Ray Eliot, this diagram shows the Illinois version of the "split T" formation, which Michigan will be called upon to stop if it is to hand the Orange-and-Blue gridders their sixth setback of the season. Ray Eliot, football coach at the University of Illinois has, in a spe- cial letter to The Michigan Daily, explained and diagrammed a se- ries of plays which the Illini grid- ders have used for many years. the "Split . r "aro' se $ The Illini coach explains the dia- gram in the following manner: - "The quarterback takes the ball T from the center and hands off to - the right halfback going into the line, or fakes to him, continues .t"^R' -$";t "..<.4h :.:.down the line of scrimmage and goes off-tackle, or pitches out to the halfback around the end. The slippery underfooting and in- creasing darkness slowed the of- fense of both teams considerably, Stan Gilliland, playing the tailback spot for Delta Sigma Delta, was unable to hit his ends consistently with short passes. The Phids, with Dave Ray and Doug Cutler throwing, . completed. several vital passes to Irv Stenn; but interceptions at key points cut short the loser's offense. The score- less deadlock was finally settled in overtime when Delta Sigma Delta was able to move the ball farther on four downs. Caputo's Passes Win Behind the passing of Al Caputo, Alpha Chi Sigma edged Phi Alpha Kappa, 13-6, ina second place play- off. The winners scored first after a 40-yard drive at the end of the first half on a short pass from Ca- puto to Chuck Eckfield and came back at the start of the second half with another scoring toss to Ron Carstens. The final second place contest of the afternoon saw Law Club beat Delta Theta Phi by the "margin of the extra-point," 20-18. Phi Rho Sigma managed to squeak out a 6-0 win over Phi Delta Epsilon in a third pace playoff.
