PAGE TWO THE MI IFIGAN DAILY WEDNE'SDAY'', OCTOBER 2711954 PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1954 CONCERTGEBOUW : Orchestra To Perform V1, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw Or- chestra, conducted by Eduard Van Beinum, will make its Ann Arbor debut at 8:30 p.m. today in Hill Auditorium. On the program will be: "Sym- phony No. 4" by Beethoven, "Af- ternoon of a Faun" by Debussy, "Musique pour l'esprit en deuil" by Escher and "Firebird Suite" by Stravinsky. The Concertgebouw Orchestra, which derives its name from the Dutch for concert-hall, was found- ed in 1888. William Kes was its first conductor. After Kes left the Orchestra in 1895, William Mengelberg became conductor, remaining until Hol- land's liberation in 1945. Van Bei- num assumed the conductorship in 1945 after being with the Orches- tra. since 1932. has taken the orchestra on several European tours, including two ap- pearances at the Edinburgh Fes- tival. Van Beinum came to the United States for the first time in January of this year to appear as guest conductor of the Philadel- phia Orchestra. After tonight's performance, the Orchestra will travel to East Lan- sing and then to Grand Rapids. Their first concert in the United States was in New York's Carnegie Hall on Oct. 12. When their tour ends Dec. 12, the Orchestra will have traveled 5,200 miles in 54 days, giving 44 concerts. Tickets are available for to- night's concert at the offices of the University Musical Society in Burton Tower. Priced at $3.50, $3, $2.50, $2 and $1.50, they will also be on sale after 7 p.m. tonight at the Hill Auditorium box office. False Step LOS ANGELES (A') - This was a certain unidentified truck driver's most embarrass- ing day. The load of "gay deceivers" he was hauling on the Harbor Freeway topped over. And there he was, picking up one by one thescore of inti- mate gadgets that had spilled out into the lanes of fast mov- ing traffic. "That's worse than having a flat," mused an observer who slowed down to give the truck driver a chance to recover his goods. Grant Set Up For Journal "Forest Science," a new forestry journal, will be published next March under a grant from the Rackham School of Graduate Stud- ies. The School of Natural Resources took the lead in organizing plans for the publication and will work with the Society of American For- esters and the U.S. Forestry Serv- ice in publishing it. Editorial offices will be at the natural resources school here, with business offices at the Society of American Foresters in Washing- ton, D.C. Prof. Stephen H. Spurr of the natural resources school will head the board of editors. Publication editors will be V. L. Harper, assistant chief of the For- estry Service, and Henry Clepper, executive secretary of the Society of American Foresters. Toledo Art Museum Exhibits Series of Famous Works Toledo's Museum of Art is ex- hibiting musical and art works in a "Composers and Compositions" series which will be on display through Nov. 7. About 75 composers from the early 17th century to the present are represented in the exhibit. In- cluded among the many famous works are original scores of com- positions by Schubert, Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven and Brahms. Works of Stravinsky, Debussy and Strauss are also shown from the modern period. Paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints, some by well-known artists, portray noted composers. Among these is the famous Beet- AM ELENEvr hoven portrait by Steller, now ex- hibited for the first time in Am- erica. Other works of art included are Ingres' Portrait of Cherubini, a Duplessis portrait of Gluck, a bronze bust of Mahler by Rodin, Delacroix' drawing of Paganini, a lithograph of Wagner by Renoir and a Munch lithograph of Delius. An illustrated catalogue has been made available for the ex- hibit. Admission to the Museum is free at all times. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays, Mondays and holidays.
