Her astounded listener, who happened to be unfamiliar with campus terminology, stopped her. "Just a minute," he said. "What, is bird-dogging? Any reference to recent national speeches?" No implication at all, the girl explained. Bird-dogging, she said, is an accepted University tradi-, tion-probably far stronger than that governing women's entrances to the Union. She listed a few simple rules. First it's necessary for one mem- ber of the party to find urgent in- terests elsewhere-finding a lost bowl of pretzels, or discussing dues with the house treasurer. This con- venient explanation allows him, as well as his stranded date, to search for greener pastures. Left alone, the coed can begin bird-dogging with no holds barred. She might begin a conversation with any man at her table, who, in turn, would find it an easy mat- ter, to leave his date. And often the original couple is never reunited until it's time to go home. The entire practice, the coed ex- plained, is probably a reaction against the common theory that you dance only with your date. "After all," she said, "you have to make new friends somehow, don't you?" No statistics on the number of pinnings and engagements result- ing directly from bird-dogging are available. But the practice goes on all the time. 8:00 A.M. -5:00 P.M.
