I THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, OCTOBER" 22, 1954 THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1954 Prepares for Annual Homecoming Festivities 4 nI Dancing Gopher Scheduled As Homecoming Display -Daily-Lynn Wallas "HOLD STILL, PLEASE!"-Alpha Delta Pi's, Roberta Johnson and Sue Kaeppel, are preparing one of the "beauties" for the Mud Bowl Queen Contest, which will be held at 9:30 a.m. to- morrow. Two Fraternities Will Hold Traditional Mud Bowl Game -Daily-Lynn Wallas ABOVE-Students Assemble Gopher LEFT-Unexpected Aid Received on Display Work By LOU SAUER Alpha Sigma Phi, winner of last year's Homecoming display award, is aiming for victory again in to- morrow's contest. Following their traditional policy of keeping the display theme secret until its completion and unveiling on the last day, they would say only that tomorrow morning their front yard will be inhabited by a giant Minnesota Gopher. She (they intend to dress their creation in feminine attire) will pirouette gracefully to ballet music in the style of "Nutcracker Suite". The reason for this animal display of classical art is still a mystery. Bill Beckman, house chairman of *Clean *New " Modern $170 Jackson Rd. Ph. HA 6-8134 3-A Approval - -- Homecoming, started last summer to work on ideas. The members of the house had discussion groups, where many ideas were presented and the best one was chosen. "We have enough ideas for our next three or four displays," said one of the men as he attached an arm to the paper-mache gopher. Tubs of paste and boxes of old newspapers 'set the scene for a night of rigorous activity as mem- bers mold chicken wire into arms, head and body and cover it with flour and water soaked papers. Painting has not yet begun, and the usual last-minute dash to fin- ish in time seems inevitable. This house is typical of the many oth- ers who will be putting their dis- plays into winning shape late into the night. By SUE GARFIELD For the fifteenth year, the tra- ditional Mud Bowl game between Phi Delta Theta and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternities will be held at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow on the corner of South University and Washtenaw Ave. Mud Bowl games have been held annually on the morning of the Homecoming Game since 1936, ex- cept during the war years. This year, a new trophy featur- ing a golden football on a pedestal will be the "goal" of fraternity players and their sorority sponsors. The game was tied last year 13 to 13, although the Phi Delts kept the trophy because of their victory in 1952. Traditionally, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority sponsors the. Phi Delts and Collegiate Sorosis leads cheers for the SAE's. The two sororities will play a soccer game at half-time. The winner of half-time festivities will alsobe awarded a new rotat- ing trophy. Queen Contest A new addition to the Mud Bowl game, students will hold a Mud Bowl queen contest, with a frater- nity member being sponsored by each of the campus sororities. En- tries may be from any fraternity and will be judged on feminity, ori- ginality and typical "coed dress." Judges for the queen contest will include Wrestling Coach Clifford P. Keen, Dr. 'William M. Brace of the public health department, and Dean of Men Walter B. Rea. The winner will be picked before the game, amid cheers from the spon- soring sororities. Jim Bradley will coach Sigma Alpha Epsilon for the second year straight year while Rusty Swaney is the coach for Phi Delta Theta. Refereeing the contest will be Har- ry Ellis and another former var- sity player. Between halfs of the sorority soc- cer game, the SAE and Phi Delt marching bands, made up of the pledge classes, will perform.. Last year approximately 1,500 students attended the traditional Mud Bowl game. In case of rain, the festi- vities will not be held.
