Wolverine-MSC Grid Contest Sold Out, Crisler Announces By JACK HORWITZ "Injuries, injuries, and more in- Juries" is the cry of the Wolver- ine coaching staff as it prepares to take a 38-man traveling squad to Evanston, Illinois for the 29th gridiron clash with the Northwest- ern Wildcats Saturday. The team will leave the Michi- gan Union at 11:00 today and go to Willow Run Airport. They will leave Willow Run at noon (EST) and land in Evanston at 12:10 (CST). Oosterbaan will take his squad to Dyche Stadium where they will practice in the afternoon. Three first stringers weren't on the traveling roster released by Coach Bennie Oosterbaan yester- day afternoon. Halfbacks Ed Hick- ey and Tony Branoff and center John Peckham are being left in Ann Arbor. Branoff Loosens Up Branoff was out on the field-for the third straight day, yesterday afternoon, but he wasn't in full uniform and only jogged around the field. Hickey hasn't gotten beyond the training room since he injured his ribs in the Iowa game last week- end. Peckham has an injured foot and didn't even show up for yes- terday's practice. The Wolverines worked out in the rain with practice on both of- fensive and defensive plays. They have been holding this type of practice all week. Oosterbaan was probably afraid to have a scrim- mage for fear of more injuries to the squad. Jim Bates, who missed all of last season and part of this season with injuries and illness, seemed to to be in condition to play against the Wildcats. Bates was shaken up in last week's Iowa tilt but ap- parently no serious injuries devel- oped. Starting Line-up Uncertain Oosterban is still not certain over his starting line-up for the North- western clash. Up front he will probably have Ron Kramer and Gerry Williams at the ends; Art Walker and John Morrow at the tackles; Captain Ted Cachey and G. Edgar Meads in the guard slots; with Bates at center. In the backfield John Morrow will start at quarterback if Michi- gan receives, but Oosterbaan isn't sure of who will fill the linebacker spots. George Corey and Dan Cline will probably play the halfbacks with Dave Hill or Fred Baer at f ullback. The complete traveling squad in- cludes: Baer, Baldacci, Terry Barr, Bates, Charles Brooks, Cachey, Cline, Correy, Clement Corona, Don Drake, Jim Fox, Ronald Gey- er, Jerry Goebel, John Greenwood, Dave Hill, Dick Hill, Earl Johnson, Stan Knickerbocker, Bill Kolesar, Kramer, Duncan McDonald, Mad- dock, Tom Maentz, Bob Marion, Matulis, Meads, Morrow, Marvin Nyren, Jim Orwig, Rentschler, Charles Ritter, Mike Rotunno, Ed Shannon, Jerry Snider, John Vese- lenak, Walker, and Gerry Williams. , :. .lt . , : : .- .f. ti. .:::. , :. [ : ,.{.{y l Y GEORGE COREY ... replaces Hickey Michigan athletic director H. 0. (Fritz) Crisler announced yes- terday that the Michigan-Michi- gan State football game at Ann Arbor Nov. 13 was a sellout. This makes seven straight years that all seats have been sold for this particular game, a good indi- cation of the hot rivalry between the two schools. Crisler said 97,239 seats had been sold for the contest, which will climax the home season for the Wolverines. Last year's hard- fought battle, which the Spartans won 14-6, probably had much to do with attracting the capacity crowd. Homecoming Seats Available In announcing the Wolverine- Spartan sellout, Crisler empha- sized that30,000 seats are still available for the Minnesota Home- coming game next week. He added that 40,000 still are on hand for the Indiana game, October 30, and 35,000 for the Illinois tilt on November 6. Early losses by Illinois probably account for many of the as yet vacant seats for that game. The Illini, usually a very good draw- ing card, are suffering one of their worst seasons in recent years. Fullback Lou Baldacci continued to work out with the squad. He has been alternating between the quarterback and tailback spots on the offensive plays. Baldacci, who has been ill for the last two weeks, is still doubtful as to whether he will have enough strength to play Saturday. The loss of Branoff and Hickey makes room for two unknown half- backs, Dave Rentschler and Chuck Matulis on the traveling squad. Halfback Tom Hendricks was also left off the traveling roster. CN-10, 1505 Washington Ave 3 By DICK CRAMER Overshadowed by the Wolverine grid team, Michigan's soccer squad will attempt to achieve a measure of glory this Saturday afternoon when it opens its fall season at Bloomington, Indiana against In- diana University. The team, striving for varsity recognition an~d membership in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Soccer League, expects to play from five to seven matches before the end of the season. Besides Indiana, they will meet Michigan State twice and Ohio State and Michi- gan Normal once. Indiana Tech and Notre Dame have also been contacted for possible games. The first home game will be November 13. All home games are played in the soccer field, east of the Michi- gan Stadium. Last year the Wolverines won four and tied one in seven games. The high point of the season was a victory over Purdue, the subse- quent winner of the Michigan League. In two previous meetings with Saturday's opponent, Indiana, the soccer men emerged victor- ious once, and fought -o a tie in the other contest. Michigan's probable lineup for the encounter this weekend will comprise Ken Ross, goal; Harry Montague, and Captain Mike Bar- nard, fullbacks; Dick Booth, Tali Ceperitis, and Otto Vogl, half-' backs; and Philip Yen, Don Bar- clay, Kuo-Chiew Quan, Agah Chin- gi, and Tom Tuttle, forward line.
