SUNDAY, OCTOBER 3,1954 T"E MICHIGAN DAILY PAG ENn STJYDAY, OCTOBER 3,1954 TIlE MICHIGAN DAILY PA(V R1~V1~ A "Ju k7A;o v AUA,-w I lw ,,, Campus Welcomes Cadets Fraternity Fall Rushing Continues II Today marks the beginning of the second week of fraternity rushing for the largest number of rushees in the history of the University. More than 100 men have been visiting the houses for lunches, din- ners and smokers during the past week. Yesterday some of the fra- ternities invited men to bowling and lunches, and a few of them asked their rushees to attend, the football games with the actives. Bob Knutson, IFC rushing chair- man, expects that more than 600 men will pledge this semester. Knutson emphasized the neces- sary difference between fraternity and sorority rushing systems. Fra- ternity rush parties are on a more personal basis. The men may con- tinue to attend functions of the houses they like as long as they wish. Final pledge bids are extend- ed through personal contact. Fraternities Numerous "The reason that we conduct rushing in this manner is that with the large number of fraternities on campus, it is not necessary, in fact would be impractical, for us to use the strongly selective system of the sororities." Fraternities have no limits on the number of members they are allowed to pledge, except those which are self-imposed for reasons of practicality. Wednesday at 5 p.m. official pledging will begin, closing Mon- day, Oct. 11, at 5 p.m., when pledge cards will be due at the Ad- ministration Building. Signing Wednesday Most of the fraternities will be- gin to show interest in specific rushees on Tuesday or Wednesday, although the actual signing cannot begin until Wednesday. Rushees who would like infor- mation about specific houses are asked to see the rushing counsel- or in the IFC office Monday through'Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. An estimate of the number of rushees now visiting each house indicates that approximately fifty rushees will return to each frater- nity at the beginning of the week. This number will gradually dwin- dle to about twenty as pledging time comes near. After pledging there will be a two week dead period when there is no rushing. Then open rushing will begin, when men who were not able to pledge will be able to call the houses they like and express their interest. During this time the fraternities will also contact men in whom they are interested and invite them to the house. This pe- riod will last until the end of the last week of classes.
