Spectrometer N ow Under Construction I I I ENDING TODAY I I By MARY LEE DINGLER In the subterranean depths of the third basement, Randall Lab- oratory, a machine called an Ebert Grating Vacuum Spectrometer is now being constructed. As impressive as its name, the spectrometer is a large device re- sembling a gigantic bathtub when viewed from one angle and a cof- fin when seen from another. It measures a full 15 feet long and weighs 2,240 pounds. Its cast alu- minum base is 14 feet long'and tips the scales at over 1,500 pounds. Actual construction of the ma- chine was begun last September under the supervision of Prof. Gor- Hotdogs Not To Be Cooked At 'U' Stadium Hot dogs will still be on sale during tomorrow's football game, but will no longer be cooked at the Stadium. While the product sold may be the same wieners as in previous years, the County Health Depart- ment has ruled that they can no longer be cooked and sold on the premises. Instead, they must now be cooked and pre-packaged for sale in a licensed restaurant. Kitchens in private homes have been ruled out. The department ruling hits main- ly civic groups and home owners in the stadium's vicinity. Last August, some civic organi- zations met with Health Depart- ment officials to iron out existing difficulties and offered to pay for additional department inspectors to supervise the stands during game afternoons. But the department handed down a ruling, the provisions of which the organizations found impossible to meet. The result was the pres- ent conditions of sale. The ruling, moreover, limits the sale of cooked food to hot dogs. i JACK--WEBB as SGT. JOE FRIDAY in the first feature-length produc- tion of ft 1 WARNERCOLOR with Tweety BEN ALEXANDER Pie as Officer Frank Cartoon Smith COMING Charles Laughton don B. Sutherland of the physics department. The apparatus was de- signed by Hamilton Marshall, grad, who is working for his PhD in Physics and who will use the spec- trometer as his thesis. Although the tank itself was con- structed by a Detroit Company due to lack of facilities here, Marshall has done a great deal of the ma- chine work himself. Uses Infra-Red Light In operation, the mechanism uti- lizes an infra-red light source and several strategically placed mir- rors to send light through the spec- trometer. The light is then sepa- rated by a special grating into narrow bands of wave lengths. These wave lengths are then fo- cused on a detector which en- ables the scientist to determine at what wave length molecules ab- sorb light. Will Determine Force When the spectrometer is com- pleted, it will aid the scientist in studying the manner in which mol- ecules and atoms are linked and in determining the force neces- sary to hold them together. The date of completion, however, remains a matter for speculation. Marshall, who may haveone of the most monumental theses on record, hopes it will be soon.
