Judic itself had declined to comment on the case although sub-committee member Prof. Jos- eph E. Kallenbach of the political science department said, "there were other factors involved in the decision. It wasn't just a mat- ter of serving drinks to minors." Prof. Kallenbach did not indi- cate what these circumstances were. f' While it is always pleasant. to win with assets greatly superior to the opponents', an even sweeter victory in bridge is attained by keeping the opponents from using what they have. The bidding on this hand got of f to a vigorous start. The double by West shows the strength of an op- ening bid with support in the un- bid suits. The redouble by North is a standard bid, telling his part- ner that he holds more than ten points. NOTE THAT East is now not obligated to bid because his part- ner will have anotherschance to speak. After West bids two dia- monds, North bids two spades to show his support for his partner's suit. At this point South can see that his side has at least 26 points, and eight or nine spades. These being the normal require- ments for game, he bids four spades. West led the king, queen, and ace of diamonds, the last being trumped by the declarer in his hand. At this point the declarer can see that he will make his con- tract if he can hold his losers in hearts to one. Clearly if the king of hearts is on side, that is if East has the king of hearts, a finesse will be successful. However, because West doubled, it is unlikely that East has the king, thus some other line of play must be resorted to. The key card in this situation is the nine of hearts, as will be seen. THP DECLARER first draws1 trump and then plays three rounds of clubs, ending up in the dummy.. At this point all hands have four cards, the dummy and the declarer each hasve one spade and all their original hearts. East has his original four hearts, West has three hearts and either a diamond or club, Muller Appointed To Library Posty Recently appointed Assistant Director of Libraries for the Uni- versity is Robert H.
