After winning a pair of home contests, the Wolverines were the victims of two upsets between se- mesters. Illinois beat the Michigan team 55-41, while Iowa came through with a stunning 481%-47%/ victory over the highly rated Wol- verine squad. * * * TONIGHT'S meet promises to be a very tight contest. Minneso- I.. LI I TODAY & SUNDAY ESTHER TONY WILLIAMS MARTIN in a Singing Romance M-G-Ms SPECTACULAR LOVE MUSICAL! LOVE* ta has beaten Iowa, Northwestern, and Indiana in earlier matches. Its only loss came last Saturday at the hands of the power-packed Illini, 56-40. The Minnesota gymnasts will present four top performers in Captain Duane Eklin, Harry Brown, Doug Day,'and Jim Jack- son. The versatile Day is the Go- phers' top man on the parallel bars, side horse, and high bar. Eklin is the visitors' top tumbler, while Jackson performs on the flying rings and Brown is a trampoline artist. Coach Newt Loken-s charges will be minus the services of Harry Luchs, one of the top all-around performers in the Big Ten this year, when they face the Gophers. The Conference parallel bars Konno Splashes COLUMBUS-(A)-Ford Kon- no, Ohio State's Olympic swim- ming champion from Hawaii, broke the world record in the 220-yard free style yesterday as Ohio State defeated Indiana 65-28. Konno was ,timed in 2:04.8, breaking the record of 2:05.5 set by John Marshall of Yale in 1950. champion in 1952, Luchs is ineligi- ble for the remainder of the sea- son due to scholastic difficulties. THE LOSS of Luchs will be partly compensated by the eligibil- ity of Frank Adams and Anthony San Antonio. Loken feels that Adams and San Antonio will add strategic depth to the Wolverine squad. Adams has shown champion- ship potential in several exhibi- tions earlier in the season. San Antonio has also performed well in exhibitions and has looked especially good on the side horse, a Wolverine weak spot. Loken plans to use virtually the same lineup seen in the Wolver- ines' two previous home meets, the only changes being the loss of Luchs and the addition of Adams and San Antonio. At 1-211 Pool Sporting five All-Americans and two newly-eligible sophomores, Michigan's swimming squad is set for tonight's meet with unbeaten Michigan State here at the Intra- mural Pool. All-Americans Bumpy Jones, Ron Gora, Don Hill, Tom Benner ad John Chase are but a few of the obstacles in State's way. The Wardrop twins, Bert and Jack, should add considerably to the Maize and Blue hopes. The twins, both holding British champion- ships, have just become eligible for' varsity competition. * * * COACH CHARLES McCaffree and his MSC natators will depend heavily upon mainstays Chuck Baldwin, Tom Payette, Jack Hell- wege and Lanny Johnson. All but the latter were members of last year's All-American squad. The East Lansingers have top- pled their five previous oppo- nents, holding the upper hand in meets with Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Iowa and Purdue. Matt Mann's Wolverines havej taken twelve straight in the past two seasons, four of them this year. Victimized by Mann's 1954 en-, tourage have been Oklahoma, Northwestern, Iowa State and Purdue, Mann, incidentally will be facing the Spartans for" the last time in a dual meet. The venerable mentor is guiding his last team before retirement in June. Michigan will counter in the event with the promising sopho- more Pete Gray, who won the 1,000 yard run in the Michigan AAU meet with a record 2:14.5, Grant Scruggs, a junior who has been running brilliantly all sea- son, and veterans John Moule and John Ross, the Big Ten in- door mile champ. The mile relay, in which Can- ham will enter Pete Sutton, Ross McNab, Scruggs, and conference 440 titlist Jack Carroll promises to develop into a dual between the Wolverines and always powerful Illinois. In the two mile relay George Lynch, Moule, Roy Christianson,1 and either Ross of Gray will de- fend the title Michiganhwon in that event last year. The only other Wolverine returning with a title to defend is Captain Fritz Nilsson in the shot put. Bob Rudisell, Dave Hessler, Bob Brown, and Goeff Dooley will com- pete in the sprint relay, whilei other Wolverine cindermen will enter 12 individual events. i F MICHIGAN DAILY Phone NO 23-24-1 HOURS: 1 to 5 P.M.
