The oil painting is one of 30 pictures done by the Korean student and now on display in the lobby of Lane Hall. Korean Student's Paintings On Exhibition in Lane Hall A fivespiece orchestra company the production, by Bill Schreiner. will ac- directed By JANET SMITH "I paint from what I imagine, what I feel and what moves me, in terms of forms, color and rhy- thm." So stated Bong-yol Yang, a native of Korea, who is currently displaying a number of his oil paintings, etchings and litho- graphs in the lobby of Lane Hall. Working mostly in a modern trend and making bold use of color, Yang has completed a majority of the pictures during the past two years, while a student in the College of Archi- tecture and Design here at the University. Priced from ten to 200 dollars each, the paintings include several selections shown recently in New York City, where Yang displayed his work. The artist has also pre- sented exhibits in Miami. Busy attending classes in the mornings and working in the afternoons, Yang spends all the time he can find or "make" at his easel. Born in North Korea, he' went to Tokyo at the age of six and there attended grammar and high school. His parents felt that the educational opportunities were better in Japan than in Kora and so sent him there to live with a brother. While a child, Yang spent time drawing and doing water colors. Other artistic members of the Yang family include a brother who writes and sister who plays the piano. However, the student has not heard from his family since coming to this country. The war, in 1943, had brought such turmoil and danger to school- ing in Japan that Yang decided to return to his native Korea. When military occupation b e g a n in Korea, in 1945, he moved again, this time to southern South Korea. Thus he hoped both to escape "the petty annoyances of the com- munist regime" and to further his study by association with Ameri- cans. With the help of an American army officer, whose home was in Miami, the young artist set sail for America in 1948: Enrolling as an undergraduate in the Univer- sity of Miami, Yang in 1952 re- ceived his B.A. degree. While attending the University of Miami, Yang spent two sum- mers in New York City studying with Art Student League. Interested in all kinds of art work, but spending the major por- tion of his time on oil painting, Yang plans to teach art after he has finished his schooling. The exhibit in Lane Hall is open free of charge to all interested persons. SWAN LEGS r .fi -...::....,...'..... . . . . . .
