Beams and wires smoldered. The soda- fountain counter rested peace- fully on top of seared stools. . A rack of twenty-five cent pock- et books stood askew in the middle of the store with the pages of the books curled. Outside in the street walking was treacherous. Pieces of glass and ice littered the sidewalk. Burnt toys lay amidst thermos bottles and children's dolls In the window of the Little Skipper Toggery Shop a child manikin stood covered with icicles and another lay postrate in the display. One of the owners of the store grabbed a small handbag from the arm of a burnt manikin and carried it dazzeldly inside try- ing to salvage the remains of her merchandise. THE BARBER SHOP two doors down was left almost untouched. Its owner was helping carry baby clothes from the destroyed chil- dren'r shop. He shrugged when asked if he was being a "good neighbor" and went on aiding his fellow merhants. The manikins in Marti Walk- er's women's shop around the corner stood gauntly in the charred remains. Water soaked clothes still hung on their racks. In the late afternoon the enclos- ed streets were opened to traffic and the windows of the shops boarded up. Cars rolled slowly down State during the early eve- ning hours. And late last night two police- men patrolled the area keeping on the look-out for vandals. Everything was ice then. .1 ~ I C.
