I PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 1954 U S 1 WIDER CURRICULUM: Four Year Plan Raises Enrollment of Nurses DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETINo By NAN SWINEHART The four year nursing program, in effect since the fall of 1952, has been well accepted and has brought a "great deal of response" to the School of Nursing accord- ing to Rhoda Reddig, director. The enrollment, she reported, has increased by more than 50 per- cent since the changeover. Why the program has been so successful is a hard thing to put a finger on, Miss Reddig said, but she attributes the success of the program to its design and com- pleteness. BECAUSE OF demands being made on nurses today, the need was seen to prepare them for good citizenship as well as for profes- sional skill. The program is set up so that the student nurse goes to school her freshman year for two se- mesters and a summer session with vacation between the end of summer school and the be- ginning of fall semester. Rare Oriental Film Slated For Showing Termed "an unusual offering for Ann Arbor residents, "Kanjincho," a Japanese movie, will be shown at 8 p.m. today at the Rackham Am- phitheater, according to Prof. Jo- seph Yamagiwa, chairman of the Far Eastern languages depart- ment. Although the movie is in Japa- nese, a synopsis has been prepared explaining the plot. "Kanjincho," or "The Suscription List," is the complete filming of a play writ- ten in 1840. "'Kanjincho' combines danc- ing, music, and chanting," com- mented Prof. Yamagiwa, adding that the play has always been a great fikvorite of the Japanese stage. "It represents the attempt of a Japanese warrior to pass through a barrier that has been set up to. apprehend him. He is the youn'ger brother of -the Shogun, who was the actual ruler of Japan in 1185, the time when the action takes place," said Prof. Yamagiwa. FINAL TWO PE Sueno De Una N b Her sophomore year, the student nurse is in school for two semes- ters, has a month's vacation and then goes to summer school. The third and fourth years are divided into quarters during which the student gets experience in various clinical services. Vacations during these calendar years total five weeks including one week at Christmas and four weeks at the end of the fourth term, the end of the summer. While the four year program is longer and more expensive than the three year program, it is short- er and colts the same as the five year program. * * * IN CONTRAST to the old three year program and like the five year one, the student gets a bachelor of science degree in nursing. The University School of Nurs- ing, Miss Reddig said, is not the first to adopt this program but isj one of the first to be the object of so much outside interest and ap- proval. In 1919, a five year plan was Inauguarated which included three years of LS&A subjects and two years of nursing. In 1944, the al- lotment was changed to two years in LS&A subjects and three years of nursing. The most recent change is the four year plan which has replaced the three and five year plans.
