Hahn of the De- By RONA FRIEDMAN partment of Thoracic Surgery "Anyone who hides behind the yesterday was named winner of Fifth Amendment is a fool," said the nation's oldest medical essay competition, the Caleb Fiske Es- say Award. Dr. Hahn will receive the award for his work, "Recent Advances in Cardiac Surgery," the Rhode Is- land Medical Society announced. The fund was begun in 1934 to provide premiums for outstanding essays on subjects contributing to the advancement of medical sci- ence. It was founded by the fourth president of the society Dr. Caleb Fiske. A graduate of the Medical School of Northwestern Univer- sity, Dr. Hahn held a Heart Train- eeship at the National Heart In- stitute last year and is a Benja- mine Swig Fellowk in Experimental Surgery. He has received training in general and thoracic surgery at Western Reserve , University in, Cleveland, at Stanford University and here at the University. JOIN THE RED CROSS CAMPUS CAMPAIGN Prof. Preston W. Slosson of thej political science department in a Hillel sponsored discussion on Ike- McCarthy and the Fifth Amend- ment Sunday, They are swearing to their own criminality, because when some-I one refuses to answer questions, investigators assume they have something to hide, and take theirj criminaity for granted, he said. "HOWEVER, I can understand, the moral reasons why some per- sons refuse to testify such as pro- tecting their neighbors or their own privacy," the political expert added. "Has Senator McCarthy gone too far?" asked Prof. Slosson. He cited recent events such as the senator's withdrawal of his li- bel suit against the recently de- feated .Republican senator from Conn., William Benton; the de- nouncal of McCarthy on the floor of the Senate, by Senator Ralph E. Flanders, and the en- dorsement of this speech by the President. "However," Prof. Slosson point- ed out, "McCarthy does not stand alone in Congress. There are at least 9 or 10 senators and 20 re- presentatives that will back him besides certain states that he could carry. Thus, the Republican Party cannot function without him, or at least they think they can't." The rapid rise of McCarthy to pubic notice was not due to any- thing unique in what he said, for Senators Velde and Jenner have said as much, but to the fact that he is a "better showman than the rest," comented Prof. Slosson. "McCARTHY IS only interest- ed in one thing-McCarthy," he said. "He is just an opportunist politician riding the waves of ag- grandisement," "The foreign press have built McCarthy up into nightmare proportions, " he continued, "but is believed and is effecting our, foreign policy. He is compared by soifte to Hitler." Even though 75 percent of Con- gress are lawyers, the Congression- al investigations have disregarded our legal traditions, the professor pointed out. The investigators have used second or third hand evidence, ambiguous statements and have published evidence and the decisions before the trial was held, the expert concluded. U" Quin et Plans Rackham Concert A varied program of wind in- strument music will be presented by the University Woodwind Quin- tet during a free public perform- ance at 8:30 p.m. today in Rack- ham Lecture Hall. Among the six compositions to be played are three contemporary works-Pierne's "Pastorale," Boz- za's "Scherzo" and Jongen's "Two Pieces, Op. 98." Also to be played are Rossini's "Quartet in B flat" and Haydn's "Quintet." Grad House The Intercooperative Council has completed its plans for the conversion of Osterweil House at 338 E. Jefferson into a house for graduate women, definitely nextE fall, and possibly this summer if enough women are interested, ac- cording to Sue Messing, '54, ICC personnel chairman. The proposed change was brought about by the large num- ber of graduate women now spread out in the three women's co-ops. They do not come under graduate rules, and consequently leave at the end of a semester, According to co-op officials, with graduate women in onej house, the situation would be a' more convenient arrangement. There will be no curfew, but there will be a house mother, chosen from among the graduate wo- men themselves. Interested graduate women may call Miss Messing at NO-25974, or Luther Buchele, ICC Executive Secretary at NO-86872. Osterweil House is open for in- spection by all graduate women.
