THE MICHIGAN DAIL'Y' TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 1954 TIlE MICHIGAN DAILY TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 1954 Middle East Crisis Has Religious Basis Young Says By HARRY STRAUSS ' "The underlying crisis of the Middle East has its foundation in a different corporate cultural soul than that of the Western world," sans Prof. T. Cuyler Young, teach- er of Persian language and history at Princeton, "and this leaves the area searching for a zone of neu- trality." Speaking yesterday on "The Cri- sis in the Middle East," at a lec- ture sponsored by the Near East- ern Studies Department, Prof. Young said that the overt crises of, recent years as the Iranian oil nationalization, the Syrian coups, the Egyptian revolt, and the Isra- el-Jordan relations, are out- growths of this philosophical quandary. ** * DIVIDING his view of the Mid- dle East's crisis, into categories, Prof. Young noted that most of the economic nioves of these coun- tries are more "symptomatic than axiomatic," being closer to a po- litical tie than an economic one. "Impatient East . .. reluctant to wait," seems to be the appar- ent dilemma, he continued; and "political and ' social' change postponement contributes to the crisis." In the political field, Prof. Young separated Turkey from the rest of its neighbors as that na- tion has "mastered events that still trouble other countries." "From the U.S. point of view in the field of international relations, everything is in relation to the cold war, and it shocks us to find others not of the same feeling to- ward the Communist threat," he continued, but remarked that we should realize that these lands are more aware of the Western world and its colonialism than Commu- nism, and so those countries use the cold war as a bargaining unit. "Jerusalem epitomizes the crisis of the Middle East," he concluded, as .that city is desired by many factions for reasons of prestige, but mainly for religious reasons; and, Prof. Young added, "in the last analysis, the crisis is religious and spiritual."
