THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE 1 Chairman, Directors Coordinate All Phases of JGP Production Elena Nikolaidi Will Appear) At Hill Concert Friday Night' 'U' Groups To Initiate Pool Today By JOY STANLEA Ti Coordinating the script, scenery, costumes and lyrics into a polish- ed production of the 1954 Junior Girls' Play is the time-consuming job of three coeds, Lois Klein, gen- eral chairman, Jill Coleman, di- rector and Mimi Buck, assistant director. Lois, who as general chairman must be familiar with all phases of the work of production, is a junior in the literar college, ma- joring in fine arts. Her particular interest is in the history of art and she hopes to do educational lecture work in a mu- seum after her graduation next year. As a freshman, she was floor- show chairman of Frosh Weekend and was elected to Alpha Lambda Delta, freshman honorary society of which she is now vice-president. In her sophomore year, Lois worked on Soph Cab as the script chairman and was tapped for Wyvern, junior honorary so- ciety. Any spare time she may have this year from her studies and duties with JGP is devoted to her job as president of Alpha Epsilon Phi. Jill, who as director of the pro- duction presides over all the re- nearsals, also ended up writing the script after confusion during the summer left the central com- mittee with nothing more than the basic idea. Following this main theme, she spent Christmas vacation this year writing a new plot for the production which emerged as 'Tickled Pink.' A junior in the School of Social Work who is minoring in creative writing, Jill hopes to work for a year after graduation and then come back to do graduate work in social work unless a good oppor- tunity for a writing job presents itself. - A great deal of experience in campus activities preceded her job with JGP. As a freshman she was --Daily-Betsy Smith JGP-Jill Coleman, director and Mimi Buck, assistant director are looking over the script for the 1954 JGP, 'Tickled Pink' which will be presented March 18, 19 and 20 at the League. Admitting she superstitiously considers her success & result of luck, Elena Nikolaidi, Greek con- tralto, will appear Friday at Hill Auditorium. Justifying her superstition in the fact that the ancient Greeks con- sulted the Oracle, Miss Nikolaidi attributes much of her success to certain signs and portents. * * * ON NEW YEAR'S Day, 1936, her first omen of good luck occurred. Traditionally, the Greeks have a celebration and feast on the first day of the new year. The festivities end in the cut- ting of a large cake in which a coin is hidden. The one who re- ceives the slice containing the coin is assured of good luck. That year the young singer got the slice and a few weeks later she was chosen by the Greek govern- ment to go to Vienna to study on a scholarship. ALSO IN the same year, she won an international voice competi- tion in Vienna and was selected by Bruno Walter to join the Vi- enna State Opera Company. Late in 1948, Miss Nikolaidi came to America for the first time. As she came down the gang- plank to enter New York, as play- ing card fell at her feel, face down. Timidly picking it up, be- cause if it had been a spade it would have meant the worst of luck, she discovered the luckiest card there is, the king of hearts. * * * HAVING AS strong an interest for home-making as she has for singing, she is married to Thanos Mellos. Both studied at an Athens conservatory, and were married soon after they graduated. Mellos, a baritone, accompan- ied his wife to Vienna where she was signed by the Vienna State Opera. * * * AS THE OPERA company pro- hibited the signing of husband and wife at the same time, he became I Women's new pool will be in- itiated from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. to- day. FROM THE lounge on the sec- ond floor spectators have access to the gallery which has a seat- ing capacity of 700. The lounge where the furniture will be ar- ranged in small groups, will serve as a meeting place for groups plan- ning activities. Later today at the new build- ing, the official University blaz- ers will be shown. From 5 to 6 p.m. coeds will try on the blazers of charcoal, grey, white or navy blue, with shorts and skirts. This is the first time a Univer- sity group has sold the blazers, and proceeds from the selling of the $22 and $26 jackets will go to the Women's Athletic .Association. The jackets can easily be com- bined with any sports outfit and can be worn throughout the year. A Michigan crest on one of the three patch pockets, matches the ELENA NIKOLAIDI Locker rooms are equipped with full length mirrors and hair dryers. Adjoining the locker rooms are shower stalls and foot baths. Classes will be held after the initiation, and groups such as the Michifish will start practice. The Michifish will put on a show for floor show chairman of Frosh Weekend and also appeared in Gulantics. Last year Jill, who is affiliated with Pi Beta Phi, put her tal- ents to work as general chair- man of Soph Cab. Mimi, who assists with the work of directing the production, is a junior in the literary college, ma- joring in speech. Her extra-curricular activities have included serving as program chairman of Frosh Weekend and assistant booths chairman of Soph Cab and working with the Gul- antics committee this year. Affiliated with Gamma Phi Beta, Mimi is also a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Wy- vern. Other members of the central committee for JGP, which will be presented March 18, 19 and 20 at t h e League, include H e l e n Schwartz and Priscilla Miley, se- cretaries and Jane Kohr and Jo- anne Lichty, dance chairmen. The list continues with Nancy Bennett and Linda Huntington, make-up; Virginia Reubene, mu- sic; Linda Beck, choral director; Sue Fricker and Alice Robertson, properties; Barbara Uebel and Jo Decker, stage managers and Pa- tricia Leroy, programs. Also serving on the central com- mittee are Nan Swinehart and Charlotte Carter, publicity and Susan Stewart and Ann Mercer, tickets and ushers. a teacher and coach, giving up his professional career for his wife. He now devotes much of his time to managing her musical affairs and helping to raise their son, Michos. Speaking three languages, Ger- man, Greek and English, Michos loves to hear his mother sing. A combination of Greek and American dishes is served in the Mellos household. When Miss Ni- kolaidi has time she does her own cooking, specializing in dishes of her homeland. Fresh squid is one of her favor- ites, fried and served with lemon. A variation of an established fa- vorite, she finds her recipe for Greek meat balls is especially po- pular in America. Miss Nikolaidi regards her tal- ent as a God-given gift which she must employ to its fullest for the enjoyment and enrichment of others. If her singing has not quite measured up to her own standards, she has been heard to criticize herself as she leaves the stage. deADV ENT URE m1WY r-a -E EUROPE, 60 Days, $490 - (al expense incl steamer) Bicycle, Faltboot, Ski, Motor, Rail.
