J. C. Caroline, Illinois' great sophomore back, set one of five new Conference records with, an amazing total of 919 yards by rushing in six Conference games. THE GREAT Paul Giel, back- bone of Minnesota's offense for three years, emerged as the Big Ten's top all-around offensive star for the second time in three years. In the course of doing so he set a new one-game mark of 53 individual plays, 35 rushes and 18 passes, and a season's record of 163 rushes. The latter record displaced a mark of 147 set by Alan Ameche in 7 games in 1951 while establishing the previous high of 774 for total rushing yardage. Mickey.
