Offense
One of the brightest sophomore
stars in Big Ten history and a
three-year ace certain of immor-
tality for his brilliance, and ver-
satility shared major statistical
honors in Big Ten Conference
football play in 1953..
J. C. Caroline, Illinois' great
sophomore back, set one of five
new Conference records with, an
amazing total of 919 yards by
rushing in six Conference games.
THE GREAT Paul Giel, back-
bone of Minnesota's offense for
three years, emerged as the Big
Ten's top all-around offensive star
for the second time in three years.
In the course of doing so he
set a new one-game mark of 53
individual plays, 35 rushes and
18 passes, and a season's record
of 163 rushes. The latter record
displaced a mark of 147 set by
Alan Ameche in 7 games in 1951
while establishing the previous
high of 774 for total rushing
yardage.
Mickey. Bates, Caroline's sopho-
more teammate at Illinois, equal-
ed a modern era record of four
touchdowns in one game against
Ohio; State., While leading Con-
ference scorers with 54 points in
six games, he missed a season's
record.
