S T HE MICHIGAN D AILYA FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1953 M~- CALL SAVES CUB: Museum Zoo Welcomes New Addition By .RUPERT°CUTLER . : 3 A well-timed phone call by Prof. Earl C. O'Roke of the wildlife management department. of the School of Natural Resources sav- ed the life of a black bear cub, permitting it to become the most recent addition to the museum zoo. Found by a local farmer who took it from an abandoned trap in the Upper Peninsula -the cub was taken home for a pet. Then conservation officer Don Boyer confiscated the cub because it is illegal to keep wild animals in cap- tivity without special permission. * *; * HAVING no way to take care of the animal, Boyer brought it to the University to be humanely killed and used for scientific pur- poses.' But Prof. O'Roke thought that the bear's life should be spared, if possible, and called prefect of museum exhibits Irving G. Rei- mann, to see if a place could be found for it in the zoo. A cage was available, and the cub was given a reprieve and a home too. On returning from his Colorado .honeymoon following a summer spent in Alaska, animal caretaker Stewart Lowther was surprised to sand the cub among his charges, 'but was happy because, as he says, "The bears are the funniest crit- ters here." Lowther says that the cub, which he has named "Tootles,", is shy and suspicious of strang- ers, staying in its "doghouse" except when eating foot placed near the outside fence. "Tootles" is friendly with him, however, and has learned to "talk" when it wants to eat something special, such as raisins out of the caretaker's hand. -The food the museum supplies its hungry cub includes eggs, car- rots, apples, lettuce, bread, milk and dogfood. Winters, secretary of the American Judicature Society, warned here last night. "OH, I'M SORRY-it was all my fault' may be a gracious thing to say when you've spilled the gravy on your hostess' tablecloth, or stepped on your dancing partner's toe," Winters said, "but don't say it when you get out of your car after an accident, no matter how wrong you think you were." "Even if you were in the wrong, the other party may have been guilty of contributory neg- ligence," he continued. "A mo- ment of extreme excitement and agitation is no time to try to make a fair evaluation of liabil- ity. "Any admission you make in the presence of a witness is pretty sure to be held against you. Better not talk about it at a1l-and that in- cludes accusing the other fellow, too." * * * TURNING to other suggestions for "legal first aid," Winters pro- posed four rules for keeping out of legal trouble: U Geologists Attend Session Eleven members of the Univer- sity geology department have re- turned from Toronto where they attended the annual conference of the Geological Society of Ameri- ca. Headed by Prof. Edwin Goddard, the group included Prof. George Ehlers, Prof. Claude Hibbard, Prof. Robert Kesling, Prof. John Dorr, Prof. James Zumberge, Prof. Ken- neth Landes, Prof. Frederick Tur- neaure, and Louis Briggs of the department. "Embarrassment over discus- sion of the cost of legal services has kept too many people out of law offices," he said, "and has contributed to misunderstanding between lawyers and clients."
