BARRING THE Spartans' path to Pasadena, however, is a Michi- gan team which has every advant- age in today's game except that of playing on its home field. Mich- igan is a great underdog. Michi- gan is in much, better physical condition. Michigan has the mem- ory of three consecutive defeats at Spartan hands to bring it to fever pitch for today's clash. If ever the elements of an up- set were present in a game, they are present in this one. Michi- gan's football players need only look to the once-victorious Boil- ermakers of Purdue to gain con- fidence for today's encounter. If Purdue could do it, then the Michigan boys can use the mot- to to spur themselves to great heights this afternoon. The plain fact is that Purdue did it, and did it royally, not even permitting the great Spartan of- fense to cross its goal line. Mich- igan is certainly a better football team than Purdue, but it remains to be seen how the Spartans will perform against their dearest rival. Special to The Daily CHICAGO - Michigan State captured the Big Ten Cross Coun- try Championship yesterday for the second consecutive year as Michigan finished fourth behind Indiana and Wisconsin. The Spartans score of 39 beat out the Hoosiers by four points in the race which was won by Rich Ferguson of Iowa with a time of 19:43. Wisconsin's total was 63 while the Wolverine score was 68. THE TEAM score is determined by adding the finishes of the first five runners on each team. Michigan's Ron Wallingford ran neck and neck with Fergu- son until, with a half mile to go in the race, he developed cramps in his legs and dropped back to a 33rd place finish. Francis Zellers of Indiana mov- ed up to take second place 150 yards behind Ferguson while Michigan State's John Cook was third. John Ross was Michigan's highest finisher as he ran his best race of the year to finish fourth in the time of 20:01. * * * THE SPARTANS compiled their winning total by having all five of their scorers finish in the top twenty. Besides Cook's third place finish, Ron Barr and Lyle Garbe finished eighth and ninth respec- tively while Dick Jarrett came in 12th and Ken Barley grabbed 17th place. Due to the fact that Iowa, Ohio State, and Minnesota did not have full teams, the run- ners from these schools were -discounted in the team scoring. Thus Michigan State got credit for 2nd, 6th, 7th, 10th, and 14th. JOHN MOULE of the Wolver- ines, also running his top race of the season captured sixth place, but the next best Michigan har- rier was Geoff Dooley who came in 22nd. Michigan's George Lynch, greatly hampered by a pulled ach- illes tendon followed one place be- hind Dooley while Lou Kwiker completed the Wolverines' scoring by finishing 24th. Rounding out the top ten finishers, aside from those al- ready mentioned, were Tom Monofore of Wisconsin, fifth, Ohio State's John Coldren, ninth and Jim Lambert of In- diana who finished tenth. Indiana's Jack Wellman, who was expected to be up among the leaders was a disappointing 11th. and this may have been the differ- ence between winning and second place for the Hoosiers. 'Kid' Gavilan Rips Bratton;1 Still Champ CHICAGO -(P)--Welterweight champion Kid Gavilan proved he still has "it" last night with a brutal punching display against outclassed Johnny Bratton of Chi- cago to keep his title on a unani- mous decision in 15 rounds. Stung by reports he was "all washed up," the slick Havana Keed threw the book at his sev- enth challenger with a ferocity that had the Chicago Stadium crowd yelling "stop it" through the final rounds. REFEREE Frank Gilmer let the uneven struggle continue as Brat- ton retreated under steady fire with both eyes puffed and his hands up. In the eighth round, Gavilan actually rained 53 blows-be- lieve it or not-on his cornered opponent. As punch after punch thudded home on Bratton's sup- posedly china jaw, it seemed he certainly must go down. It was the same kind of helpess retreat that Randy Turpin made when he was backed to the ropes by Bobo Olson. The third meeting between the two old foes was strictly no contest from the early rounds. Bratton's early speed soon faded under the steady fire of Gavian. When cor- nered, Bratton flurried back while he was able, but he simply didn't have it.
