FRIDAY, NOVEMBER I3, 1953 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE TIHREE ' I I -------- ---------- r RARE ECLIPSE: Planet To Pass Between Sun, Earth Tomorrow Morning 4 Between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. tomorrow Mercury will pass di- rectly between the earth and sun, one of the 13 times this will hap- pen during the 20th century, ac- cording to Prof. Hazel Losh of the astronomy department. These transits, during which the planet appears as a tiny black dot School Students To Attend Clinics High school students a n d teachers tlroughout the state will r attend one of two clinics held to- morrow by the speech department. A theater clinic will be held in the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater, and a classroom teachers confer- ence on speech disorders among school children will be presented in Rackham Bldg. on the son's surface, are usually not observable, Prof. Losh said. SHE LIKENS the event to a so- lar eclipse, when the moon passes between the earth and sun. Due to Mercury's great distance from the earth, however, the transit can be observed only through a telescope, Crossing near the north limb of the sun, Mercury's last such transit took place on Armistice Day, 1940. Seven -more crossings are scheduled for the rest of the century. These rare occurances are of scientific value, Prof. Losh ex- plained, since they offer a means of determining accurately the po- sition and motions of the planets. Prof. Losh said that "the first authentically observed transit of this planet was made by .the as- tronomer Gassendi on November 7, 1631, in Paris." ISA Delegates To Confer.
