PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1953 MAN WANTED: Union- Opera Continues Search for Ike Double s f , By JOEL BERGER Eisenhower's double is still miss- ing. Union Opera director Fred Ev- ans said yesterday "Up 'N' Atom" is still looking for a suitable male student who can be made up to portray the chief executive. Inter-' ested students are urged to come between 3 and 5 p.m. today to Rm. 3G of the Union. "WE'LL FIND our man yet," Evans said. He should be about 5'11", the height of the President. Facial features are the most im- portant thing for the actor geting the part. The appearance of the double onstage in the finale of the Op- era, which will be shown locally from Dec. 9 to 11, won't be the first time in the show's history that a national celebrity has been portrayed. Zander Hollander, '53, former Daily Feature Editor, last turned the trick in 1950, whn he appeared in the finale of "Lace It Up" as Senior Chairmen To Meet Today A meeting of chairmen and co- chairmen of Senior Board -com- mittees will be held at 7:30 p.m. today in the League. Plans for committee work for the rest of the semester will be discussed, according to J o h n Black, '54, president of the board. Gen. Harry Vaughan. Long before this, shortly after the Opera first appeared, Fred Lawton performed the first of his many characteriza- tions of Fielding H. Yost, former Michigan football coach. Past Operas have had their share of actors who later went on to become famous as thespians and in other professions. Perhaps the best known of these men is New York's Gov. Thomas E. Dewey. DEWEY appeared in 1923's "Top ' The Mornin'" as an Irish country gentleman, Patrick O'- Dare. As one of the show's stars, he sang "A Paradise For Micks" and "Satan Put The Devil In The Irish." Two years later Valentine Da- Ivies, director of Hollywood's "Miracle on 34th Street" co- authored the script for "Tam- bourine." With over 800 students trying out for the musical com- edy, a high point of the sea- son was reached when the cast was received by President Coo- lidge and was feted in Washing- ton. Along with famous men, the Opera in its 45 year history has produced many of the University's traditional songs. "When Night Falls, Dear" was sung in 1908 during the first Opera. The song was written by composer Roy' Welsh and the script of "Michi- genda" was authored by the late Prof. Donal Haines of the journa- lism school.
