Speaking to SL's Culture and Education Committee, Dean Ba- con said that the University-wide scholarship committee would wel- come SL members. She urged the Legislature to appoint students who would "stay with the schol- arship committee." Med Alumni Meet To Hear Ruthven Talk University President Emeritus Alexander G. Ruthven will ad-I dress the special honors convoca- tion at the final session Saturday of the Medical School's fifth trien- nial medical alumni conference which opened yesterday. Dr. Gould A. Andrews, chief of clinical services at Oak Ridge, Tenn., opened the conference with an address on the current uses of radio active isotopes in clinical imedicine. About 500 doctors are attending the conferences which will feature lectures and discussions on the latest developments in the field of medicine. Eight University alum- ni will present papers dealing with their respective fields. FRIDAY THRU SUNDAY ROMANCE! JOHN WAYNE "Need," she said, is "one of the most important criteria in nearly all of our scholarships. There is definite discrimination against wealthy students. Any- one whose name is Rockefeller does not stand a dance," she added. On the question of political dis- crimination, Dean Bacon explain- ed, "you can't go back 50 years and ask a man who died to change the will in which he gave a schol- arship with a bias provision to the University." THERE ARE many different committees which ,decided upon awarding of scholarships, she con- tinued, but the system is fairer than if there were only one com- fittee. Students are so close to the situation concerned with schol- arships other than the Regents Alumni awards given to incom- ing freshmen, that they shouldn't appropriately sit on the other scholarship commit- tees, she said. Dean Bacon advised SL to ex- amine the "kinds of committees and what they handle" rather than to study the individual schol- arships which the University of- fers. _ Union Seeks 1 Fresh Talent Square dance callers, magicians, baton twirlers and monologists are just a few of the unusual enter- tainers being auditioned by Un- ion Councilmen. From 10 to 11 a.m. each Satur- day, Richard DeLong, '55E, and Don Carlsen, '56, have been audi- tioning campus entertainers cull- ing their names from files of fresh- men talent cards collected during orientation week. * * * UNION Councilman, Tom Leo- pold, '55, said yesterday that some freshmen missed filling out the tal- ent cards earlier in the semester. Freshmen and upperclassmen may still fill out cards between 3 and' 5 p.m. daily in the Student Offices. For the first time in recent years, the Union is maintaining a complete file of student talent providing a source of entertain- ment for campus functions, Leo- pold said. In the past, many groups look- ing for talented people to perform at parties haven't been able to contact entertainers due to lack of a central filing bureau, he said. Under the new system, groups will have easier access to their choice of singers, pianists, instrumental- ists and masters of ceremonies. 3' -AP Wire Photo MOSCOW SLUMS-This view of the slums in Moscow was taken by former Daily Feature Editor, Zander Hollander. Hollander just returned from a trip to Russia, with two other college newspa- per editors. The slum area in the picture lies about 100 yards behind the American Embassy in Mos- cow. A postwar apartment building may be seen in the background. Accident Fatal* To Prominent 'Local Resident Travel agency salesman and prominent member of the Ann Arbor Civic Theater, T. Todd Jones, died yesterday morning when his car collided with a freight train near Wayne. The victim was en route to De- troit during a heavy fog when the accident took place at a grade crossing at Ford Road, two miles west of the city. THE TRAIN was moving at re- duced speed, engineer Alfred Wruck said, due to the fog. He added that warning flares at the crossing were working. Jones, born in Scranton, Pa., Dec. 31, 1912, was a graduate of the University of Scranton, and came to Ann Arbor in 1944. For the past two years he has conducted a weekly 15 minute pro- gram over WPAG for the Washte- naw County Humane Society. Past president of the Civil Thea- ter, Jones was scheduled to play a lead role in the group's forthcom- ing production of "Three Men on a Horse."
