I PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1953 wnmmw FUND DISTRIBUTION: Tuition Spent on School, Sports, Union,_League DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN By PAT ROELOFS Although tuition is not the major expense encountered by University students, a record of the distribu- tion of tuition funds does indicate some of the complications in fi- nancing an educational institu- tion of this size. According to charts drawn up by the Statistical Services offices, the largest part of student's tui- tion goes into a general fund. This fund, plus appropriations from the State legislature is then allocated for instructors' and adipinistrative salaries and operating costs of the University. Football tickets are al- so provided for from the general fund. ** * A COMPLETE breakdown, show- ing specifically the distribution of the total tuition income is not made because of -the joining of State and student funds. A general breakdown for both resident and non-resident stu- dents reveals the following: Non-Resident Students: Total fee .................$215.00 General fee ...............$202.75 League (female students) . $ 7.50 Alumni Association $ 1.25 The higher League allotment, in comparison with the Union fee is caused by the lower number of wo- men enrolled in the University than men; resulting in a smaller! number of students supporting the League. U.S. Dollar Reaches Low NEW YORK - ( ) - The pur- chasing value of the . American dollar reached the lowest point in its 168-year history in August, the National Industrial Confer- ence Board reported. This sent the nation's cost-of- living to an all-time record high. IThe value of the dollar dipped to 54.4 cents in August, the board said, based on the prewar Janu-, ary, 1939, dollar equaling 1001 cents.1 This compared with 54.8 cents in August, 1952, and represented a decline of 0.7 per cent over the year. The board pointed out that the drop had not been sharp and said it appears to be leveling off.
