AY, JANUARY 10, 1953 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE THREE _____________________________________________I 'M' Thinclad Relay Team Races Tonite Lynch Also Entered In Washington Meet Michigan's indoor track season gets underway tonight when its two-mile relay team and George Lynch, entered in the 1000 yard /run, compete in the Washington Evening Star Games at Washing- ton, D.C. The relay team, holders of the all-time Big Ten indoor record, is composed of Geoffrey Dooley, John Moule, Bill Hickman, and 'John Ross. * * * THE ONLY newcomer in the foursome is Dooley. The young sophomore, who is fast becoming one of the best 880 yard men Don Canham has coached in some time, is replacing Don McEwen in the relay. McEwen, captain of last year's thin-clads, has retired from' college competition. The three other members of the quartet are veterans of the cinder track. Both Moule and } Hickman ran on last year's record breaking teams. Ross, anchor man of the team, is holder of the Big Ten indoor mile mark of 4:09.4. Spectators will see one of the best races of the year when the two-mile relay is run. Among the six teams entered, are four meet champions. * * * IN ADDITION to the Maize and Blue, Big Ten titleholders, there are Georgetown, winner of the 1952 Milrose Games and record holders in the event; Villanova,. Los Angeles Coliseum champs, and North Carolina, Southern Re- lays' record holders. Teams repre- senting Maryland and Seton Hall complete the field. The other Wolverine represen- tative, George Lynch, will be run- ningfor the first time under Mich- igan's colors. - 'M' wrestlers 'V. Crush Indiana, Grapplers Triumph, 22-6, Capturing Six Events as O'Shaughnessy Wins By LAIRD WALLACE Bouncing back in fine fashion from a decisive defeat at the hands of a powerful Pitt team, Michi- gan's grapplers swept victorious- ly through six of the eight matches to snare an impressive, 22-6 triumph over a poorly condi- tioned Indiana outfit last night. JOHN ROSS . anchor man Michigan Five To Battle Northwestern for Cellar Michigan's unpredictable cag- ers, resting comfortably in the fa- miliar Big Ten cellar, will have their eyes on the ninth slot cur- rently held by Northwestern when they meet the Wildcats tonight at Evanston. Coach Bill Perigo's Wolverines go into the battle, which will be broadcast over WHRV at nine o'clock, sporting a 1-5 conference record and an overall mark of 3-6. THE WILDCATS also boast a single loop win, but that was scored at the expense of Minne- sota's second-place Gophers in their last start. Coach Waldo. Fisher's fast-improving Evanston outfit had previously dropped un- impressive conference decisions to Michigan State and Ohio State. But the 71-65 upset of Minne- sota's then-league-leading quin- tet dispelled any doubt as to Northwestern's potential on the hardwood. The Wildcats first showed signs of brilliance in a New Year's Eve loss to Notre Dame when they chopped a 23-point deficit down to five points in the last quarter. * * * NORTHWESTERN had previ- ously beaten Butler and lost to Western Michigan in other non- conference tilts, giving it a 2-4 overall record. Most potent scorer in the re- vitalized Wildcat attack is cen- ter Frank Petrancek., The 6'8"* junior, one of the nine lettermen Coach Fisher has available, COLLEGE BASKETBALL Auburn 64 Georgia 59 Penn State 62 Carnegie Tech 51 North Carolina 97 Washington and Lee 75 Miami 93 Florida State 63 Cornell 63 Harvard 59 Princeton 76 Navy 75 (two overtimes) Bowling Green 88 Detroit 84 Rio Grande150 Ashland Ky 85 Loyola New Orleans 66 Washington St. Louis 62 Illinois Normal 81 Southern Illinois 80 Southeast Missouri 57 Central Mis- souri 51 N- poured through 215 points last season to place sixth in the Big Ten scoring race. The only senior on the squad, Captain Larry Delefield, will team up with Don Blaha at the forward spots, while guards Don Biever and Larry Kurka round out the host's starting five. PERIGO's fast-breaking Wol- verines, still smarting from the 79- 49 shellacking Ohio State stung them with Monday, will be facing another shoot-and-run team to- night, so another high-scoring fiasco could be in store for race- horse ball fans. Perigo is expected to rely on the same seven cagers who have carried the bulk of the work in Michigan's previous efforts. Paul Groffsky, the team's lead- ing point-getter with 136 mark- ers in nine contests, will oppose Petraneck at center; Milt Mead, Ralph Kauffman, and John Cod- well will alternate at the forward posts; and Don Eaddy, Ray Pav- ichevich, and Captain Doug Lawr- ence will handle the guard duties. Joe Scandura completely domi- nated the action in the 147 pound class in-decisioning Wayne Wad- del, 10-0. Shortly after the first period opened up, Scandura scored four quick points by a take- down and a near fall and brought the fans to their feet by nearly pinningshis opponent as the horn sounded. IN THE heavyweight division, Dick O'Shaughnessy, after chas- ing his opponent, Bruce Bren- neman, around the ring for two and a half periods, finally caught up with him for the pin after 7:58 minutes of the match. Joe Atkins, 127, started the ball rolling for the Michigan cause by besting Indiana's Bill Parsons, 4-2. In the 130 pound class, Captain 'Snip' Nalon, consistent point- getter for the Wolverines, picked up his third straight decision of the season by humbling Bob Fish- er, 11-2. * * * HOOSIER captain Jim Ellis, 157, eked out a 5-3 win over Miles Lee by completing a successful escape and by gaining a time ad- vantage in the closing seconds of the third period. Statistics follow: 123-Joe Atkins (M) defeated Bill Parson (I) 4-2. 130-"Snip" Nalan (M) defeated Bob Fisher (I) 11-2. 137-Andy Kaul (M) defeated Gerry Grummel (I) (forfeit). 147 - Joe Scandura (M) defeated Wayne Waddel (I) 10-0. 157-Jim Ellis (I) defeated Miles Lee (M) 5-3. 167-Bronson Rumsey (M) defeated Charles Pankow (I) 15-13. 177-Kay Hut'sell (I) defeated Ronny Horne (M) 8-1. The Wolverines downed Indiana by a 661/2-292 margin in the last campaign. With the season already under- way the Hoosiers have taken their lone meet, topping Western Illi- nois State College, 54-41. Coach Otto Ryser boasts four returning lettermen but has only one new prospect who can be fig- ured to count for much in this year's contests. Byron Boyer, in his first year of competition for Indiana, as one of the top two trampoline men, teams up with letterman Ron Johnson in this event but the Hoosiers sorely feel the loss of Dick Albershardt, who won the Big Ten tramp last season. One of Indiana's best all-round men Johnson will compete in five of the six scheduled events omit- ting only tumbling. He took a fifth place on parallel bars in the Big Ten meet last year besides do- ing well in most of the Hoosiers' meets. Captaining the squad is senior Herb Vogel, who is highly rated as a high bar and parallel bar man. Vogel is "also entered on the side horse and flying rings. Two other veterans Wayne Tru- ex and Frank Feigl round out the Indiana roster. Truex is Counted to pick up points in tumbling, his best event, and.will also see action on the flying rings. Feigl, recov- ered from a hip and thumb injury, goes in the side horse, parallel bars, high bar, and backsT ruex on the tumbling mats. The Michigan team, based around five veterans and a num- ber of good prospects, will have its toughest competition for points in the high and parallel bars. The meet is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the small gymnasium of the Intramural Building; the public is invited with no charge. Matt Mann's tankers will be out to repeat last year's 65-27 triumph over the Wildcats here in Ann Arbor, when five Sports Building pool records were smashed, and the national record in the 400- yard free-style relay was set by the team of Ron Gora, Bumpy Jones, Tom Benner and Don Hill. * * * THE ENCOUNTER in Evanston will inaugurate Michigan's drive to improve on last year's third v v place Big Ten finish. The Wolver- ines trailed the Buckeyes of Ohio State, and Michigan State in the standings. Although Michigan is heavily favored to once again defeat the Wildcats, Northwestern may make a closer fight of it this year. They are headed by cap- tain Buddy Wallen, one of the top free-stylers in the nation. Al Kuhen, a top-flight sprinter, will also go for the purple to- night. Northwestern coach Bill Peter- son also has the two men who won events against Michigan last season back again to harass the Wolverines. They are backstroker Bob Kivland, and sprinter Keith Peterson. Kivland took last year's 200-yard backstroke event, while Peterson notched a triumph in the 100-yard free-style. MATT MANN will probably send Johnny Chase, Bumpy Jones, and Pete Dow against the Wildcats in the medley relay, Wally Jeffries and Wayne Leen- grin in the 200-yard free-style, and Don Hill and John Ries in the 50-yard free-style. In the 100-yard free-style Hill and Tom Benner will probably be Mann's choices, while the 440- yard free-style will probably see Jeffries and Leengrin swim for the maize and blue. The individual medley will see Michigan put forth Bumpy Jones, the top man in the nation in this event. Jones tied the national col- legiate record in this event last year against Northwestern, with a time of 1:30.8. Don Potter, John Chase, and John Bullock will swim back- stroke for the Wolverines, while Glenn Miller will partake in the breaststroke.
